Study claims Airbnb is great for your neighborhood’s economy, if it’s predominantly white

Airbnb guests staying in predominantly white neighborhoods are more likely to shop around at local businesses like restaurants than guests staying in neighborhoods that are mostly black or Hispanic, according to a new study from researchers at Purdue University.
People who use the home-renting platform to stay in a big city, like New York, for example, tend to eat at local neighborhood restaurants close to where they’re staying. But this effect doesn’t hold true when more than half of a neighborhood’s residents were black or Hispanic, according to the study’s authors.
'Airbnb has made repeated claims that it helps the local economy in black neighborhoods, especially in New York City,” said Mohammad Rahman, a Purdue University professor and co-author of the study, in a statement given to The Washington Post.
His team pulled data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census, and Airbnb for 42 neighborhoods across New York City — the most visited and active Airbnb city in the US — along with 10 years’ worth of Yelp reviews for 34,000 of the city’s restaurants. The goal was to see how trends in home sharing stacked against trends with local restaurant employment. They found that the promised economic spillover didn’t hold up across racial lines.
Neighborhoods with a booming population of Airbnb guests typically did see a growth in people working for local restaurants, along with a surge in the share of Yelp reviews, which was a measure the researchers used to reconfirm their employment findings. But these findings didn’t carry over into the neighborhoods that were predominantly populated by people of color, even if Airbnb rental numbers were just as high.
The reason, as Rahman told The Washington Post, might be because an “uncomfortable reality” is that some visitors might be less inclined to walk around and check out the local businesses in these neighborhoods, even though they might be drawn to how affordable the housing is. Instead, Rahman added, they might just use the Airbnb as a place to sleep at the end of the day, while ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft allow them at travel to other neighborhoods and avoid exploring the one in which they’re staying. Though this first study was done only in New York, they subsequently expanded it and found similar patterns in Austin, Chicago, Portland, and San Francisco.

Did they control for crime rates? Probably not.

This is obviously racist.
I'm just gonna need some time to formulate a reason why everyone that uses Airbnb is a bigot.

Only used Airbnb once, and it was from an incredibly sweet black woman.. In somewhat of a black neighborhood. She truly went out of her way to be as accommodating as possible.. even had food set up for my family to have. Wonderful experience.

Is anyone surprised that no one wants to stay in the hood? Maybe if you are the type that just wants to do some hood rat shite with your boys, then maybe, but the rest of us would rather avoid thsoe shite holes.

Interesting claim...however, I take it a step further and make sure to skip staying in those neighborhoods altogether. It's hard to know the bad neighborhood if you've never been somewhere, but spend a good bit of time on Google maps looking at local businesses and then on street view checking out the houses/cars/some people....and you can make a good judgment. At least I hope my theory and research works out. My first time using Airbnb will be next week, and I made sure to find a decent house in a seemingly decent area.

You gonna get raped. Or murdered. Or raped and then murdered.

Crime is the #1 reason for racial issues, IMO.

Hmm, people don’t want to stay in your hood rat, crack crazed, heroin syringe filled streets when them and their family is on vacation. Strange
And they’ll pay more on the vacation to not have to stay in a ghetto? Well I’m just gonna speak for everybody here..that is just shocking, I really tell ya. Shocking. I’m shocked.

When I've booked airbnb in unfamiliar cities, I always pull up the Racial Dot Map and compare it to the rental location. If it's in a dense green area, I'm avoiding it. Call me a racist, I don't care. It's just a sad truth that most areas of a city with a very dense black population is also high crime. However, if it's about a 50/50 split, I don't mind staying and exploring the area.

I am not saying the study is wrong however I think their methodology sucks. What’s the racial makeup of yelp reviewers. What’s the average costs per night, so many things....

It won't be a racial crime though, now will it.

They should also break it up to crime rate in areas unexplored by Airbnb guest compared to areas explored by airbnb guest. Maybe people just use their better judgement and don't go out in crime ridden areas.
