Strewth! What the hell happened to great Britain!?

Whatever happened to the sun never setting on the British Empire?
Stiff upper lip chaps who had tea under cannon fire and a no nonsense attitude.
Killers in suits.
What happened to an island nation that conquered a bloody lot of the world and gave them some manners.

Men that conquered savage nations. Stood in the hell of the trenches and fought for king and country.
Died by the score fighting back a menace
Reduced to such cuckoldry today?
No allowing a dying child to seek treatment outside of their system?
What the bloody hell happened?
I’ve known quite a few brits. Salt of the earth fellows with grit in their teeth and spit in their eye.
I knew a British veteran of the 2nd war. Hard as nails and a spitfire when he had his gin.
What the hell happened? What has broken them and brought them to this sorry state?
And what are the reasons behind it? I’m flabbergasted.

The real problem is they conquered all that land- and never annexed any of it- save Ireland (now Northern Ireland, having lost 3/4 of it in the Irish Rebellion).
If all of that land was incorporated into the UK with full rights, we would be having a very different conversation.

The fall of the empire? It was unbelievably costly, nationalistic movements were difficult to tame, and European colonialism was different from other imperial exercises because there holdings were not close by. I'd argue the Suez Crisis signaled the end of their imperial phase.
They also gave everyone in the Commonwealth citizenship in 1948, which causes migration to England proper.
I don't think England is in that bad of a position though.

Probably a lot of that land was losing money. I know that the Caribbean Islands with all the deadbeat inhabitants costs quite a bit to sustain.

Many Brits remain this way. However, combination of liberals and increasing number of immigrants resulted in their voices being outnumbered.
Ask any London taxi driver, any laborer, or most standing on the sidewalk outside of a pub after work what they think about immigrants and the direction of the country.

I always figured the immense carnage of WWI, WWII, and the deaths from Spanish flu wiped out so many people that the survivors just didn’t want to spend their lives in conflicts. Think of all the young men who died in Britain and Europe. Those were the fighters who left kids without fathers or who didn’t procreate.

World population expansion and the pursuit of freedom by the people.
They underestimated the American Revolution. Had lots of other wars too that drained the country.
Had too much going on, too spread out with their quest to rule the world. People trying to find a better life than what they had.
