I've never heard of cats in an attic, but have heard of rats, squirrels, coons and possums getting in there and they tear crap up with their gnawing, pissing and crapping.
If you have access to the attic, get up there when the animals are present and they will likely run out. That way you can see where they are gaining access.
That's all I've got.

There's your problem. Catch them, kill them, and throw them in the garbage and they'll stop getting in your attic, Sarah McLachlan.

I know it may sound crazy to you, but some people are actually repulsed by killing things.

Well you and the rest of the sissy boys can deal with cat piss in your insulation.

I don't think cats are too good with a crowbar or are smashing their way in. It's more likely that the vent area is where they are getting in. Make sure the inside of your vent area has a metal screen all around it to prevent animals from getting in. If there are holes, then patch them up.

We've come a long way from our roots...
Reminds me of the story my late great uncle (Milford) used to tell of a yearly happening as a boy on the family farm up in Sabine parish. The best day of the year for him and his brothers was "Cat Day". That's the day they to take their rifles out and shoot any of the feral cats they saw...a little population control.
Ahhhh...the good old days....

I heard they don't care about reading, writing, 'rithmatic or hiss-toe-ree.

Came to make Brian Setzer references.
I see my skills are not needed here.

Maybe it's your surroundings. If you are near the Mississippi River or urban woodlands, it's possible the cats climb to the roof at night to avoid the coyotes. This is happening in many areas as the coyote population grows. It's a little hot for them to stay in the attic in the summer in Louisiana, but they'll definately go there in the winter. Some would sleep on the roof if they can't gain access to the attic.

Bowl of antifreeze ought to do the trick.

Just kill them. What's the problem. Poison those pussies.
