Westward shift continues with nearly half of the 00z Euro EPS members into Florida now (the mean is east b/c the members that stay off shore are stronger due to no interaction with land):

Another beautiful morning here in GTMO, sunny and hot. Wish Matthew would hurry up and get this over with so I can get on with my week.

Here is the Weather Underground forecast for you at GTMO as of now:

quote:

Tuesday 10/04 100% / 4 in
Tropical storm or hurricane conditions likely. Bands of heavy rain containing strong gusty winds at times. High 86F. NNW winds at 60 to 80 mph, increasing to 80 to 100 mph. Chance of rain 100%. 3 to 5 inches of rain expected.

Unless the wind field expands or the track changes, I think the low end of those ranges would be expected. Of course, wind gusts in the 80s and 90s are possible with 60-70 sustained winds.

Buoy 42058 had 92 MPH winds last night and 30+ foot waves (8 hours ago). Still showing winds in the 45MPH range with 15 foot waves.

Going on a cruise to the Bahamas in January, hoping this thing doesn't continue to push west or those poor islands are going to get slaughtered.

So I'm supposed to be heading to Orange Beach this weekend. Any chance I'm going to regret not buying hurricane insurance for the condo I rented or is this thing pretty much looking like it's headed for the east coast? Thanks.

All indications are that it stays on the east coast, but I hope this thing doesn't skip across Florida and enter the GOM

This morning's 12Z GFS now shifting significantly to the west. SC/NC landfall. This is just one run. We will have to see if a trend of multiple runs develops.

Both images below are for early Saturday morning.

Models shifting to the west.

More troubling:

Those wispy clouds expanding to the NW of the storm suggesting it's got better ventilation working right now. Starting to look more symmetrical too. Not good for those islands in the path because I think it's about to hit a strengthening phase.

This could get serious for the Carolinas

Things are looking more ominous in GTMO now, dark clouds rolling in - no more sunshine. Winds are light but getting stiffer.

FML. I was here for Cat 4 Hugo in Charleston. We've been lucky since then. It appears that luck is finally running out.
What a weird season for us. 2 tropical storms in a week just sitting off the coast dumping rain and now this.

On the other hand it looks like it may be about to ingest a decent amount of dry air in to the core as well. We shall see.

Haven't checked the local news yet.

Are they naming towns for that? It looks like Oak Island/Wilmington NC landfall and the second pic Myrtle Bch/Charleston SC?

Any of the above and I am screwed.

Keep us posted as long as you can. Do you have generator power?

No generator power, they are going to cut all the power when winds hit 70 mph, so I will likely lose internet then.

We just went to condition of readiness 1, so locked down now. The weather is starting to get darker, its still muggy out, but no rain or lightening or anything too rough.

I hope so. The presentation on satellite looks "better" but dry air can throw a wrench in the works rapidly.

Best of luck to you riding through this hurricane.

Hope nothing happens and you get through it with no issues.
