Thanks I didn't read the entire article. I am surprised they said this much...

quote:

The base that may be best known for its war-on-terror prison — now holding 61 detainees, staffed by about 2,000 temporary troops and contractors — also has sailors, families and contractors living there as more permanent residents. About 6,000 people live there in different circumstances, including about 250 school-age children with their Navy families and 2,000 Jamaican and Filipino contract laborers.

At the detention center, spokesman Navy Capt. John Filostrat said without providing details that preparations were under way for the storm. He did not reply to a question on what category of hurricane the buildings currently housing the detainees and command staff could withstand.

Sunday morning, as the evacuations were underway, Filostrat said the prison buildings where the 61 captives are kept "can withstand the current projected storm strength and the detainees will shelter in place. If the storm should intensify there is a plan in place to move the detainees to alternate shelters."

Former CIA prisoners, six of them awaiting death penalty trials as alleged al-Qaida plotters of the Sept. 11 and USS Cole terror attacks, are held in a clandestine prison building called Camp 7, whose structural integrity has been questioned. The current commander, Navy Rear Adm. Peter Clarke called it “structurally safe” in May, nearly two years after a former commander of the U.S. Southern Command, now retired Marine Gen. John F. Kelly, told Congress it had become “increasingly unsustainable due to drainage and foundation issues.”

The sad thing about that is that the JTF have to remain to guard them.

What Haiti is about to go through will be a case study of how destroying your own environment by cutting down forests leads to amplified suffering during events like hurricanes.

Unsure why you're giving me the crazy symbol. It is well known that the risk of landslides and flash flooding is much increased in Haiti because of their environmental history. It isn't some off the wall statement.

I feel sorry for those people.

From that link; a second source saying a CAT 2 when it nears the States. Something tells me no one really knows if it will weaken or strengthen until it happens?

BUT what Hati is getting ready to go through is just beyond horrible.
I'm sure Hillary and Bill and all their cronies will be right down to steal any monies that Obama throws at Haiti.

Most models in the OP still show it staying off the coast, I hope so, both for the sake of all Americans potentially in it's path, but also so I can drive safely to Gainesville on Friday.

From the NHC...

FORECAST POSITIONS AND MAX WINDS

INIT 02/2100Z 14.6N 74.8W 125 KT 145 MPH
12H 03/0600Z 15.4N 74.9W 125 KT 145 MPH
24H 03/1800Z 16.7N 74.9W 125 KT 145 MPH
36H 04/0600Z 18.3N 74.7W 115 KT 130 MPH
48H 04/1800Z 20.1N 74.5W 110 KT 125 MPH...INLAND

The latitude of the SE Cuban coast is about 19.9 or 20.0N so they are currently forecasting about 130 mph max winds with landfall about 40 miles east of Guantonomo Bay. That is a high-end, strong Cat 3 for the worst part, but GB might only have weak Cat 1 or strong TS force winds IF that forecast verifies. The wind field with Matthew is very compact with hurricane force winds only extending about 35 miles from the center.
