Smoking or vaping marijuana may trigger cardiac arrest and strokes, the American Heart Association warned Wednesday.

In the journal Circulation, the group wrote that marijuana has “the potential to interfere with prescribed medications” as well as “trigger cardiovascular conditions or events, such as heart attacks and strokes,” CNN reported.

The paper referenced studies that showed that the THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, found in cannabis could lead to sudden heart rhythm abnormalities, such as tachycardia and atrial fibrillation.

THC can also cause a quicker heart rate, increase the organ’s need for oxygen, disrupt the walls of arteries, and heighten blood pressure, the group said.

This study brought to you and funded by every big tobacco company in America.

And screw CNN, they’re no more reliable than The Onion.

So lets read the actual statement from the AHA instead of through multiple media outlets that like to cherry pick. It's literally just a short statement based on their review of existing studies. That's it.

Here's the full statement:

quote:

Cannabis, or marijuana, has potential therapeutic and medicinal properties related to multiple compounds, particularly ?-9-tetrahydrocannabinol and cannabidiol. Over the past 25 years, attitudes toward cannabis have evolved rapidly, with expanding legalization of medical and recreational use at the state level in the United States and recreational use nationally in Canada and Uruguay. As a result, the consumption of cannabis products is increasing considerably, particularly among youth. Our understanding of the safety and efficacy of cannabis has been limited by decades of worldwide illegality and continues to be limited in the United States by the ongoing classification of cannabis as a Schedule 1 controlled substance. These shifts in cannabis use require clinicians to understand conflicting laws, health implications, and therapeutic possibilities. Cannabis may have therapeutic benefits, but few are cardiovascular in nature. Conversely, many of the concerning health implications of cannabis include cardiovascular diseases, although they may be mediated by mechanisms of delivery. This statement critically reviews the use of medicinal and recreational cannabis from a clinical but also a policy and public health perspective by evaluating its safety and efficacy profile, particularly in relationship to cardiovascular health.

AHA Standalone Statement on Marijuana and Cardiovascular issues

These stand out to me the most:

quote:

Cannabis may have therapeutic benefits, but few are cardiovascular in nature.

I don't know of anyone using THC to address cardiovascular issues. It's pretty well known that THC in larger amounts can raise your blood pressure and if you had high BP to begin with could cause a cardiac event. Or increased heart rate. Not much different then if you already had issues with your liver, alcohol can make it worse.

Our understanding of the safety and efficacy of cannabis has been limited by decades of worldwide illegality and continues to be limited in the United States by the ongoing classification of cannabis as a Schedule 1 controlled substance.

Precisely. frick the DEA and Congress for their Schedule I bullshite on marijuana/THC. That's done more harm then good by a long shot in so many facets of society.

Breathing the air in Houston may trigger a heart attack or stroke. You won't find me denying myself air either.

I smoke weed before I run on the treadmill.

Does that make my chances go up?

That’s why I just drink rotgut whiskey and take handfuls of opiates from a doctor...because it’s LEGAL!

And what’s legal always means best.

After all, politicians make laws and they care about us, they told me so on the news. You know who never told me they cared about me? Farmers, growing their dirty, disgusting plants in the ground.

You know what else is a plant? Poison Ivy! You wouldn’t smoke that, would you?

Nope. That’s why I don’t mess around with stuff that’s full of bugs. Nope, just natural, legal, oxycodone and jack daniels for me. Those for sure don’t grow out of some nasty dirt.

Coming from CNN I'm surprised they aren't claiming it causes bubonic plague and certain death.

Plenty of people move away from polluted areas for that very reason.

Pretty much why I have to catch myself when I internally shame people for smoking. I do the same shite (not the pills), just with alcohol.

Nobody is living 100% clean.
