Our company was experiencing this and investigated it with US Postal Inspectors.

Mail Carrier's sell their universal locks to gang bangers and people who steal checks for a set fee. They also just steal them from mailboxes and what not to wash them.

It is pretty common theft crime that nobody is doing anything about. The US Postal Inspectors said they would look at implementing fines to mail carriers who "lose" their keys more than once a year.

But I am still surprised that 16 people downvoted this.

As many thieves and scammers there are nowadays, why should it surprise you that they would be here, too. Our moral compass needs recalibrated. Too many people think things like this are victimless crimes. I'd support forehead tattooing or hand amputation for those caught and convicted.

We did. They stole an $86K check mailed to our plumbing contractor. They somehow doctored the check, deposited it to an online bank. Made purchases to the amount close to what they stole.

We recovered our money, it took about 6 weeks. I don't know the status of the investigation.

Again, payroll is direct deposited. This is in regards to vendor payments not our employees.

Happened to us for an IRS check a couple years ago. It was a huge pain in the arse and the only reason we didn't end up in a worse situation is our bankers assistant saw it come through and thought it looked weird so she nuked it before it processed.

Shreveport here too. We have gone to 99% ACH/Wire for payables and receivables, with the few customers that still pay by check, I offer to pick it up.

It got really out of hand after 2020 and it seems like we have a new mail person each day.

It's much easier these days to identify digital attempts at fraud than physical. Digital fraud detection happens in nearly real time as well. You have your risk scenario reversed.

Growing up from since I could remember until.. I guess my early 20s we had the same mail man. Dwayne, a black dude who would park his truck in the same location and knock out the whole neighborhood in about 40 mins. He delivered mail to the surrounding neighborhoods as well. He knew everyone and everyone knew him. If you needed to get something mailed out and you put it out too late, you knew whether or not he was likely still delivering mail and a general idea of where he would be and you could try to catch him to give it to him.

There was a system, you knew who was bringing your mail.. It flowed like water. 1 person assigned to specific areas, he rarely took off but when he did his route would be split between a few other mailmen. If you ran into him when he was delivering your mail and he was taking over a few days the following week he would tell you "Look, I am taking off on Monday and Tuesday so someone else will deliver your mail, but they will likely not deliver it the same time I do.. just a heads up".

And I remember when he was retiring. I was outside and he stopped to talk.. He told me he had 3 more months left then he was retiring and I still remember this because I thought it was funny.. he said "I just want to let you know I am retiring and the post office is making a lot of changes. They are hiring a lot of women so who knows how that will turn out".. I still remember laughing and he said "I am just being honest with you, so once I retire things might not run as usual for awhile"... And he was spot on. Now the person who delivers my mail will likely be one of three people, but evidently they are moved around so one person might be 1 of the 3 for 5 months.. But even then, its common for it to be someone who isn't one of the three.

Around Christmas this past year, for about two weeks there were days my mail was delivered after 8PM. In general, its not uncommon for them to skip a day or two and then when they do deliver it, its a big pile of it... 99% is spam.

And instead of parking in one place and walking door to door and be done in, at the latest, 40 mins.. They go house to house in the mail truck. They pull up, put it in park, get the mail for that address, get out and bring it to the mail box, go back to the mail truck, put it in drive and pull up to the next house. Sometimes one mail person will do half the neighborhood then later one another one comes and does the other half.. It seems like their is no rhythm to something that should be easily figured out. People are always getting other people's mail. I have had people who live on a different street than me bring me mail that was brought to their house. That's too much inorganization for me to trust the USPS

Usps police are supposed to handle stuff like this?

Most likely inside jobs. They carrier are selling them.

This is why it is laughable for the USPS to be shipping guns to your door. It would never make it.

I am 56 and everywhere that I have lived, with the exception of one loft in downtown Athens GA., has a mailbox at the street. The mail carrier has always pulled up in a vehicle with the steering wheel on the right instead of the left, and just slid the mail into the mailbox. I don’t recall ever seeing a mail delivery system in a neighborhood or subdivision or rural area where they park and get out and walk everybody’s mail to the mailboxes . Except at apartments.

USPS is actually who pushed for the change to gang mailboxes. They despise single home boxes. Every house I've bought except for one since 2004 has had gang boxes.
