I think I read something where they speculated that the Department of Health is first up on the chopping block to balance the budget with the fiscal cliff approaching.

Also not good at math apparently...

Pretty sure every census shows that Louisiana is losing population

Exactly right, It's the states largest employer for a reason. Gotta keep that gravy rolling for the do-nothing Karen's of the world.

Bottom line, when you add everything up, property tax, ridiculous sales tax, income tax, cost of insurance, etc...

It's insanely expensive to live in Louisiana compared to other places.

I moved to the middle of Illinois for a few years in the 90's and everything was way cheaper.

For anyone interested, there's actually a PAR Webinar/Panel discussing tax reform live right now.

Richard Nelson is doing most of the speaking.

eta: Almost over, might just wait for the transcript and read through it.

Tennessee did not "git rid" of personal income tax. They have never collected it.

And is better in damn near every way from a government and economic standpoint.

False to assume this is because of property tax vs Income Tax. Louisiana was too corrupt during the periods that actual infrastructure and industry could be built and established.

Legalize marijuana and let the out of state customers make up for the loss of income tax revenue.

This and reduced spending are the only way to actually expedite any improvements. Voters expectations vs. what a good government can reasonably deliver are already miles apart. Throw in the fact that we have an electorate that loves platitudes and a government they deserve, and maybe we should just give up.

Without reforming other revenue sources, enjoy paying 12-13% sales tax

Without a total overhaul of the tax code, I'm not down for it.

However it is nice to see Fleming without the diaper on his head.

Give it up. They will just raise another tax to compensate.

Agree, we need to see several state buildings with empty offices. Time to get these people off the payroll. One of my office workers once mentioned 75% of her job for me was paying taxes, fees, licenses, dues...... Sad how business owners are burdened down with this nonsense.

I don't think a 4.25% income tax is the reason why Louisiana's population has not grown.

It's a start

Get rid of ULL. McNeese, NSU and Nichols can serve the same population. SLU is too close to LSU, but it seems to stay within its means. We only need to shut down ULL.

Someone said this stat to me recently. I wasn't shocked by it but I looked it up.

Turns out Louisiana is 38 out of 50 when it comes to government employees per capita. Nothing to be proud of but certainly not the worst. The trend for Louisiana isn't great. In 2014, the State was 29 out of 50.

Stop funding so a large percentage of local needs. Let local governments and school boards fund local needs through local taxes.

Stop sending all the money to a centralized location. That would seem to be a basic tenant of conservatism...decentralized governmental control.

Best post in this thread.

Will never happen because people would just raise hell about their property taxes going way up. They'd prefer to have the state take a little each paycheck and receive worse services for it.

Landry wants to centralize even more positions in state so he has more power. He isn’t small government he is totalitarian government. This man is a rino and we vote him in because “it’s better than JBE.” Sucks we dont have competent leaders in the Louisiana Republican Party.

That's exactly what they're trying to do. Nelson is pretty much the figurehead for it as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue. They want to eliminate state income tax, business franchise tax, and get rid of a lot of credits and exemptions. Hard part will be getting it passed.
