Quick Zillow search provided plenty of options under $450K, some even new construction or in construction.
Tbh kinda learned today ~45 min outside of Austin is affordable
Wish that were true in DFW. Anything under 400 is in a less than desirable neighborhood + will take you 1.5hr to commute in traffic

My starter home was a 2 bed one bath 850 sqft cottage. I can tell you what cramped is actually like.
My first place was 3/2 1400. I just personally think for that price, to have 1900 sq ft over 2 floors does not leave much space for a larger room. I hate lots of segmented areas. Not this is fairly common in some major cities with much less areas to build, but I just personally would like more than 2k if it's across multiple floors.

Again, we are supposedly talking about starter homes here.

I'm north of Austin right now and anything decent is $500k+ even an hour outside of the city. Same goes for the Houston area.
After a simple Zillow search I managed to find a 450k house that was 3600 sqft in houston and had an in ground pool.
Must be searching pretty lazily

Why continue to live in New Orleans?

Unless you’re in “New York , London, Paris, Munich” I disagree.

Move in with Mom and Dad and sponge off them for awhile while you plan for the future!

I guess it would depend on what you are looking for in it. Something huge? Or new of newly renovated? I just find it really hard to believe that you can't find anything for half a million or under.
Do you have kids, and if so how many?

No one is impressed.
If you're looking at 450k "starter homes" you're spending daddy's money anyway
So now you're just freaking stupid.

Where's the confusion? $450k is not a starter home for anyone without major help. Unless of course this was a "starter" home for established professionals that have been renting for several years.

I bought my first home for that price in OM after renting for 3 years. No family help. Only put 10% down.

There aren't really starter homes anywhere around dallas at this point.
Homes that were 150 10 years ago are 300+ now.

You financed $405k on your own 3 years into your professional life? I guess I'll take your word for it.
How big of an outlier was your household income at the time?

Someone doesn't understand what a starter home is.
Or at least for the vast majority of Americans.

I'm north of Austin too. It's brutal. $ per sq ft is honestly unbelievable. I don't know how people are getting approved for these homes, much less being able to actually afford them.
