You keep saying that when the national guard comes out that people don't have the same rights as they did before.
What rights have they lost?

legit question: why is protesting at night so important?
Why do roaches hide out under the fridge during the day?

Have the arguments over the past weak been solely about the community and the police or has it been materially and significantly about race from day 1?
It's a black thing

Whether we would have had the same response or not is a fun sociological question.
One where I think we all know the answer because the reaction is well beyond community vs cop.
quote:
It in no way diminishes the philosophical basis for protesting the denial of civil rights by state actors.
Fair enough and if such protest extended to solely the protest of the denial of civil rights by the cops (and maybe I am asking too much but actually was done after the facts were known to support such a significant claim), then I would be in your parlor on this.
But it is well beyond that and the facts are far from clear in justifying the conclusion and demands.
So again, even if we find scenarios with philosophical justification, this week is not 'it' terms of both scope and fact.

President Barack Obama said he told Nixon he'll be watching to determine if the Guard's presence is beneficial or harmful.
There is some irony in this statement.

quote: When the state of emergency was signed, it opened up a whole new world for action to be taken. Its all legal no matter how much anyone wants to file their little lawsuits and such. That's what they're telling us. I'm not sure it's as cut and dried as they're presenting it.
Jay Nixon was a DA, then Attorney General before becoming governor. I can't imagine he would take any steps he wasn't sure were legally supportable.
And now we have Nelly. I was waiting for this!

I'm more referring to the State of Emergency..
quote:
This means that the government can suspend and/or change some functions of the executive, the legislative and or the judiciary during this period of time. It alerts citizens to change their normal behaviour and orders government agencies to implement emergency plans. A government can declare a state of emergency during a time of natural or man-made disaster, during a period of civil unrest, or following a declaration of war or situation of international/internal armed conflict. Justitium is its equivalent in Roman law.
It can also be used as a rationale for suspending rights and freedoms, even if those rights and freedoms are guaranteed under the Constitution. Under the protocol of the ICCPR, rights and freedoms may be suspended during a state of emergency, for example, a government can detain citizens and hold them without trial. All rights that can be derogated from are listed in the International Covenant for Civil and Political Rights. Some sources argue that non-derogable rights cannot be suspended. However this theory is contested. Emergency law does and can override non-derogatory rights during a state of emergency.

He brought in State police before declaring an emergency which was technically (I believe) illegal.

At least Nelly is doing something positive and starting scholarships to send kids from that area to college.
