I would hope some one in the community, especially the mayor and his people would be looking in on their people, especially the elderly. There are some people who boarded their windows up and are scared to death to leave.

When the state of emergency was signed, it opened up a whole new world for action to be taken. Its all legal no matter how much anyone wants to file their little lawsuits and such.

That's what they're telling us. I'm not sure it's as cut and dried as they're presenting it.

Whats reasonable at this point?

I don't have an issue with the reasonableness of it. The legality of it is a separate question.

And I don't think everyone is saying you have to protest B on B to be able to protest police brutality. But when you hear the arguments ala Trayvon and here that it is not safe for blacks to walk the street because of the Zimmermans and Darren , while completely ignoring what is occurring thousands of thousands of times more often... hypocrisy is what it is.

This is legitimate. The argument, when framed as "I don't see them protesting black on black crime," isn't nearly as legitimate.

So a governor can decide to suspend the Bill of Rights unilaterally. Sounds legit.

For the safety of the citizens they can do what they are doing. And yes you have a first amendment right, but they can decide when, where, and how you have it. This is nothing new, except for those who don't like how it is.

I figured he would call in one of the MP units for this. Sound like they are providing over watch and security for the command center so the police can focus on the main areas.

Fairly reasoned use of the Guard in my opinion.

Do you feel if the officer was Captain Johnson in this case other than Darren Wilson that we would have had the same reaction?

Whether we would have had the same response or not is a fun sociological question. It in no way diminishes the philosophical basis for protesting the denial of civil rights by state actors.

Am I the only one that thinks some of these media people see getting arrested as a badge of honor?

@AP: Questions and answers about National Guard and its role in helping curb violence in #Ferguson, Missouri LINK

quote:

The National Guard is a regular presence in responding to natural disasters, but it also has a long history in helping curb civil disturbances.

quote:

Q: Why is the Guard in Ferguson?

A: Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon deployed the Guard early Monday to "restore peace and order" to the St. Louis suburb following another night of violent clashes between police and protesters that involved Molotov cocktails thrown at officers, looting, vandalism and gunfire. Police responded with tear gas. The demonstrations have been sparked by the Aug. 9 fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a white police officer. Brown was black.

The governor said in a statement that he deployed the Guard because of "coordinated attacks last night both on civilians and law enforcement officers." Nixon said the Guard's involvement will be a "limited mission." President Barack Obama said he told Nixon he'll be watching to determine if the Guard's presence is beneficial or harmful. Nixon on Monday lifted a midnight-5 a.m. curfew that he had imposed two days earlier.

quote:

Q: Who's in charge?

A: The Guard will be under the direction of the Col. Ron Replogle of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Missouri National Guard Brig. Gen. Gregory Mason will oversee Guard operations. It's the standard way of operating when the Guard is called to help quell civil disturbances. "We're always in support, never in the lead domestically. We take orders from the lead law enforcement agency on the scene," said Rick Breitenfeldt, a spokesman at the Guard's national headquarters.

quote:

Q: Who can deploy the Guard?

A: Governors or the president can deploy the Guard. In at least 10 cases since World War II, the president has mobilized the Guard for wide-ranging missions, invoking the Insurrection Act. Among them: the 1957-58 desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas; the 1965 Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, civil rights march; the 1967 riots in Detroit; the 1968 riots in numerous cities following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.; the 1970 New York City postal strike; and the 1992 Los Angeles riots after four police officers were acquitted in the beating of Rodney King. In that last case, the Guard was originally mobilized by the state. After two days, then-President George H.W. Bush called the Guard into federal service.

More info: LINK

quote:

The Insurrection Act of 1807 is the set of laws that govern the ability of the President of the United States to deploy troops within the United States to put down lawlessness, insurrection and rebellion. The laws are chiefly contained in 10 U.S.C. §§ 331–335. The general aim is to limit Presidential power as much as possible, relying on state and local governments for initial response in the event of insurrection. Coupled with the Posse Comitatus Act, Presidential powers for law enforcement are limited and delayed.

They are trying to segregate the protesters from the "bad actors" and looters. Its a very reasonable approach.

Like 808 said though, don't know about the legalities of what they are doing. One aspect is that your rights cant infringe on another's. Dont know, it would be an interesting discussion to have as I have very little knowledge outside the layman's interpretations.
