If someone is of enough threat for you to fire upon him, you don't shoot once....wait and see if he's down...shoot once more....wait and see...etc, etc,. You fire multiple rounds quickly.
I'm sure some idiots are going to take me saying "you only shoot to kill" as some sort of cowboy, "everybody should kill everybody" comment. It isn't. You don't pull your firearm unless there is an imminent threat. Firing your weapon is a last resort when it becomes a case your life being in danger.
ergo....at that point...you shoot to kill because the other person is just as likely to try and end your life. Don't take that chance. As they say....I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
