ST. GEORGE — The City of St. George revealed plans to partner with Uber to provide discounted rides to residents within the city's limits.

According to Mayor Pro Tem Andrew Murrell, the pilot program will grant residents a 50% discount on up to 10 rides a month for users traveling within the City of St. George.

The city plans to invest $500,000 into the program, with Uber gifting the city a $50,000 grant. St. George plans to review the program internally and publicly both quarterly and annually to determine its effectiveness and make adjustments where needed, Murrell shared.

Murrell hopes to have the program up and running by the start of October, just in time for the holiday season, with the program being seen as an alternative to public transportation.

A public hearing for the proposed partnership is scheduled for Aug. 19 at 5 p.m. at St. George City Hall.

Look at the utter disaster of CATS before you poo poo on this idea.

Makes a hell of a lot of sense. Just don’t sign some egregiously long contract. If it doesn’t work, cancel the program.

CATS buses were always empty and broken down on the road when I lived in BR. CATS always has major internal problems with department heads stealing money, and committing fraud.

CATS tax receipts for 2025 would pay for 973,687 $25 Uber rides.

That's about 4 Uber rides per city resident.

Because ant St. Georgian that would consider public transportation isn't about to hop on a CATS bus.

This is the way, it provides better service to the rider”point to point” rather than the EBR CATS busses.
This would be much more efficient and cheaper than CATS.

Does St. George even need that much public transportation?

I think the only reason Baton Rouge had busses in the 60's and 70's was to get the house maids from North BR to the houses they cleaned in Old Goodwood.

Uber will assist the St Georgian MILF's back home safely after a night of wine drinking.

I didn't know St George had a city hall but imagined it might be the back room at George's cafe near the corner of Staring and Highland with the round tables shoved together.

I'll have the catfish plate, please.

This is pretty cool actually.

Instead of busses with their draw to the worst parts of society and the bloat that goes with it… just let our tax dollars give us a good deal on a service that anyone can utilize.

Wish gov would think of more things like this.

It sounds like, in theory, they city is trying to privatize "public" transportation. Instead of using tax money to fund and maintain busses (often 1/10 full, if that) to drive around town regardless of if anyone is on the bus or not, the city is using that money to generate a discount to anyone who needs transportation "on demand".

Again, in theory, it sounds much more efficient. Rather than waiting at the bus stop for the bus to pick you up, then traveling to a predetermined destination, stopping at multiple stops along the way, a user can request an uber when they want it and get dropped off exactly where they want to go...without having empty buses driving around town

Do you prefer they do like BR and pay $25 million annually for empty buses and regular investigations/arrests for misappropriation of funds like CATS?
