Ok, St George is not in the city limits of BR, so BR get zero tax revenue from them, and in return, no money from BR goes to StG.

Correct in that what would be St. George is in the UNINCORPORATED part of East Baton Rouge Parish. It is not "breaking off" from the City of Baton Rouge, nor is it seceding from EBR Parish.

City/Parish consolidated government DOES receive tax revenues from the unincorporated area (property taxes [library, BREC, COA, schools, etc.]; sewer fees; sales taxes). The unincorporated areas receive some of that back in services and infrastructure.

quote:

StG is in EBRP, so all property taxes will still go the parish (which is also run by Broome), plus any parish wide sales tax.

No. Any property taxes that would go for schools (of an ISD is ever approved) would not go to the Parish.

The city of BR said no. You have to be a city if you want to do that.

The people of south east BR said ok we will make a city. THey went out and got signatures and campaigned, but the city of BR never told them how many were needed and called people on the petition lists and asked if they wanted their signatures removed.

The petition falls a few hundred signatures short despite never making the total needed public. The city of BR gerrymanders property lines to incorporate businesses while avoiding “less than desirable” areas.

A lot of people see this and get pissed off at the crookedness with which the city of BR has acted and now vow to support putting the vote for St. George on the ballot despite not doing so last time

This is a giant lie.

What part?

The sketchy annexation bullshite? Because that absolutely happened. Look up Mary Olive Pierson.

The signature issue? That happened. The person left out shenanigans by the Registrar of Voters removing names and a District Court judge refusing to require the a-hole to do his fricking job.

Imagine if you were on a playground and you had toys and a small part to yourself and your friends but the other kids would come and beat you up and steal your toys and break them

And then you were forced to buy yourself new toys and pay for their toys

And if you went to their part of the playground they’d at least beat you up and they might kill you

So you and your friends decide to go to a corner of the playground and not pay for any more toys for the delinquent children

That’s st George

Very grey statement, but the approximate range was indeed known.

Annexations are based on annexation requests, so this statement is wrong either intentionally or not.

Look, I signed the petition, even though I don't live in SG because I support better schools.

Imagine to the north of middle earth there is an evil empire that makes their living by raiding the lands of men and elves. As the empire and its blight spreads the armies of evil get closer and closer to traditionally safe men and elvish strongholds

The armies of Mordor ride large CATS to swiftly enter the strongholds of men and elves and steal their TVs (and our tax dollars pay for these CATS)

Your uncle gives you a ring, this ring of power represents the bond between north middle earth and south middle earth

Your uncle says you have to destroy the ring and your human and elvish friends want to help you so we can all live in peace

No brainer right?

Nice summation. Also- A lot of people, myself for instance, opposed the original drive, and now support it. Which is a testament to how truly awful , wasteful and corrupt Baton Rouge Government is.When they write the book on this , the defining moment will have been the COA scandal and the way the downtown establishment closed ranks to protect and defend the worst crooks in the world gleefully fleecing an old woman’s inheritance. BR is truly corrupt and incompetent and proud of it- and of course if you mention it you “ hate black people “.

St. George keeps getting smaller and smaller due to lack of signatures. Not to mention everyone in St. George needs to look down the road 30 miles and see how bad it was for sorrento. They would need to build schools, pay for a fire department and police department, pay for teachers, pay for a school board, pay for city council, etc... plus have you seen their maps? They do crazy drawing to try to include areas right next to LSU. But it’s basically dead with all the businesses they were hoping to include getting annexed into EBR due to their request.

I kinda get it. Love the idea of blowjobs and free beer and the check out line. But for the most part you can choose where you wanna live. Why move to BR and then get mad how shitty it is. Go across the EBR line and problem solved. Now you don’t pay their taxes or have to deal with their shitty schools. Worked for me.

I think the defining moment was when Sharon Weston Broome was elected mayor of BR/president of EBR Parish. The COA scandal may have been the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back though. Broome and her minions have waged war against south BR since she took office. Her administration has branded those who support the St. George incorporation effort as racists, when in fact it is her own incompetence and racist policies that are driving BR's white residents out of the city.

You’re right. It wasn’t a few hundred short. It was 70 something short. Why? Because the city annexed parts of the petition area while the petition was ongoing. They threw out petitions for frivolous reasons, oh your voter registration you only have a middle initial, but on your petition you spelt out your middle name. Out you go!

And then the outright lies and scare tactics that “better together” used via calling all the 65+ who signed and threatening them with higher taxes and taking away their benefits.

Don’t worry though. I’ll bet my life on it going to a vote this time. You have no idea how close they are. And they still have til December.

I’ll put it this way.... if they can get roughly 5 sigs a day til then, it will get on the ballot. And they get a frick ton more than 5 a day

In all seriousness, how will the ballot measure work?

Is it open to all of EBR voters, or only those that live within the proposed St. George boundary? Just needs a simple majority to pass?

People are sick of the incompetent city government of EBR / BR wasting money year after year on stupidity. The tax base of high earning whites in St. George would like to keep their money closer to home on schools and better infrastructure that actually matter.
