On her way to the Gulf of America to be prepared for her final resting place. An amazing ship that still holds the world record for the fastest Atlantic crossing ever by sea.
Would have loved to have ridden her but alas she was before my time.

It'll be one hell of a dive site once it is an artificial reef

Hasn't Destin gotten too pricey for rednecks?

So much for a dive site.

Hopefully that thing actually makes it down there in one piece. It's been a long time since she's sailed.

My grandmother traveled to Europe on the SS United States years ago. I remember her telling us kids about the "luxury" of that type travel.

The luxury idea of a cruise was destroyed after a group of 7 couples went on a carnival cruise. As one described it a Walmart on a Saturday experience.

The sand is 180. she will likely settle 5'-8' into the sand over the next couple years, but the top of the ship and likely the deck should still be within rec limits. The tech guys will love penetrating

wouldn't it be a bigger draw for charter/recreational fishermen...making it dangerous for divers?

I saw the SS United States when she was docked in Norfolk VA waiting for another lease on life. She was already beginning to show the ravages of the sea and it was sad to see it that condition. She served well on the surface and will continue to do so beneath the waves.

I just watched an episode of Mysteries of The Abandoned: Hidden America where this ship was featured as one of the sites. I was unaware of the history tied to this ship, along with its owner's ties to the liberty class ships produced during WW2. Pretty neat story of how the ship came to be.

Looks like a damn ghost ship.

I know many aren't happy to see it sink, but it's better than getting scrapped

There was a foundation working to find a home for her, but it seems it was mismanaged or incompetent. While it is totally a tall order to preserve her, you do notice that there are something like 10-20 very large warships floating off major cities as museums, plus the NS Savannah and RMS Queen Mary. Someone just found $75m to invest in the battleship SS Texas for restoration to put her back on display for another few decades.

How they could find $75m for USS texas, one of 10+ battleships out there, but not for SS US? No idea.
