I work at the used car division of largest dealership by volume in Montana and we put our "best price" on every vehicle, new or used, on the lot and the same price on the Internet.

We don't negotiate or accept offers on price at all unless there's something really wrong with the vehicle that needs to be fixed and even then I've only seen $200 at the most taken off the list price. We do sometimes meet people in the middle or even go over a little on trade value to get a sale. We aren't afraid to let people walk mosly becauses a whole dealership (Chevy, Toyota, Cadillac and any brand used) we average 340 cars a month so it's not like we'd be hurting for business anyway.

Wanted to get the OT's opinions on stores that operate this way.

I like the model but people are so accustomed to negotiating on cars that they are gonna think there is still wiggle room.

You aren't giving the buyer the opportunity in feeling victorious when making sizable purchases.

Not much. There's always a better price out there.

The last car I bought was at a place like this. After doing some research the car I wanted was several grand cheaper at this place than everywhere else (at the time of purchase it was only 2 years old with 11K miles on it, so it's not like it was a dud). I liked it. I didn't have to worry about haggling or trying to finagle my way into something lower...I went in knowing the price and that's what was paid. In and out.

I like the idea as a customer because I hate the haggling part. I would rather you give me your number and I either take it or leave it.

To me, as a salesman (which I am not in anyway), I feel as though the sticker should be a negotiable price. That way the customer feels as though they accomplish something and are more likely to buy if they "make" you drop the price a little.

just me .02 though. I don't know shite about buying or selling cars to be honest. I just bought my first truck, by that I mean in my name and not my parent's, but my dad did all the leg work with negotiating and shite.

i'd just find a better price somewhere else, and make sure to let you know about elsewhere being cheaper.

gotta agree with Artie here, everything is negotiable

i would rather they just post the price with no bullshite. This is the price. If I am willing to pay that price fine. If not, i go elsewhere.

I think that is a better method. I don't really like haggling.
Though I do because we are expected to. I prefer the American store experience to the foreign market experience where everything is negotiable.

I think we should tip the car salesman 20%.

Is the warranty and financing still negotiable? I saved more there than I did on the vehicle itself.

Let's say that I'd like to purchase 30 brand new trucks for my company. Full price...no haggling.

That said, my son is turning 16 and I like that 2009 Hyundai Sonata over there. I think that your price is a little too high at $11,000. I'd like for you to meet me at $8,000 for the Sonata and full price for the 30 trucks.

Are you willing to let me (and 30 trucks and 1 sonata) walk for $3,000?

My last two vehicles I wrote down my price along with a printout of my reason why based on online data. Gave it to the guy and said take it or leave it. They both let me walk and followed me to parking lot to talk. Each time they took my offer. That's how you haggle. Don't give them a chance to give their "best" deal because they never will.

You aren't the only game in town so I'll be moving along UNLESS your offer is indeed the best offer.

Indeed.

I always thought it hilarious when Carmax doesn't negotiate as a business model but set their prices even higher than the sticker of regular dealerships sometimes.

Ummmm nope?
