re: Spinoff: thoughts on "non-negotiating" car dealerships?

Before I step foot on a dealerships property, I have already done my homework. The internet is a powerful tool in your favor for this if you take the time. I know what they paid, what the manufacturers and dealer added on options cost. I know the rebates and the added fees. Usually I know more about the vehicle than the person trying to sell it to me. I realize the Dealer has to make money to stay in business and their first offer is always high as a starting point. I give them one offer and if they accept it, fine. If not, I simply find another place. I never make the deal personal, its business and they all have families to feed too. Sometimes I can buy a car the first day, sometimes it takes a few.
In the end, it's your money, spend it however your want on the car you want and never have regrets the second day.

You say it's non-negotiating. But then say you all sometimes meet customers in the middle. So you all do negotiate and the prices you put out there are not your best price.

Not everything is negotiable.

Your approach is reasonable.

As long as you have truly fair prices on the units I like the model.

Scooba, as far as I know financing for us isn't really negotiable because we don't finance in house. We basically have to take what the banks (we deal directly with like 15) give us and run with it as is.
With regard to warranties I am legally required to at least discuss extended warranties with customers because we don't offer a 30 day. The warranties we offer aren't negotiable per se, more of a take it or leave it thing in the same vein as our pricing.
Forkbeard...
I'm sure we could come to an agreement in that situation. I heard a story from the Chevy store not too long ago about a salesman who lost a 3-truck deal because their sales manager was unwilling to come down $26 a month in payments to make it $1000 even. With 30 trucks in question though I can't imagine we'd let that fall through over $3000.

There's no such thing as a non-negotiable price at a car dealership or any dealership selling big ticket items like that. Any company willing to let 30-40k walk out the door over a couple thousand dollars won't be in business very long.

Basically the American public perceives people in your industry as a collection of liars and scam artists. In some cases this is unfair...some. Generally, we don't give a rats arse what verbiage you use to describe the price (best price, internet price, close out, clearance, blah blah blah)...we fully expect it is marked up at least of 5% (rough number, pulled directly from my arse

Tell that to Carmax. Go in there and "make them an offer they can't refuse".

Did y'all specialize in Corvettes on the new side?

Carmax preys on lazy people that don't know any better. As more and more buyers get informed, Carmax will sell less and less vehicles. At some point, they'll either lower their prices, or adjust how they do business.

No they won't. Their company continues to grow and they continually open new stores.
I do agree they are overpriced and their quality sucks.

Glad to see you have a crystal ball. Their model can't last as the internet makes buyers more informed. If their prices were actually decent, perhaps. But they are always overpriced compared to easily attainable alternatives.

I agree. But that company is growing not shrinking. They have been doing it the same way since 1993.
I am in the car business but I do not frick people over believe it or not.

This exactly.
I am not a great negotiator, so I plan ahead of time. I get all of the information I can get on the cars and set a window of what I want to pay. I'm not going to sweat 300 dollars on a 15k plus purchase. I'm an accountant so I can handle the numbers well. If the person selling me the car tries some bullshite other than APR I walk away instantly. If I can't trust the salesman, how can I trust the company?

I like the CarMax model. I have bought 4 cars there in the last 10 years. We got a decent trade-in/cash offer or whatever they call it when they buy your car back when we bought my wife's Accord. I liked the experience and was turned off by a local Jeep dealership that when it was time for a new truck for me I went back to CarMax.
5-6 years go by and the wife and I needed new vehicles again. Since we never buy new, we didn't even bother with regular dealerships. We bought her Highlander there, and I figured since I wasn't in a huge hurry to get rid of her Accord, I'd try to sell it on my own. Their cash offer gave me a good starting point on pricing it, along with other research I did. Same thing when I sold my truck. I ended up making about $2,000 more by selling them personally, and just paid cash for my used Jeep at that point.
