Reading the thread yesterday about what Elijah Wood has alleged goes on in Hollywood in regards to child molestation made me think what I would do (if I were a parent) if my kid wanted to be an actor/actress or was approached by a talent agent about auditioning for a role.

On one hand I feel you don't want to hold them back if it is something they are good at and/or passionate about but knowing what is going on (or has alleged to be going on) would certainly give me a lot of pause.

So what say y'all?

How young are we talking? I would let them do theater and stuff like that in their youth, but I'd have them stay away from the cameras until they were 18. Once they're 18, it's up to them, and hopefully you've raised them right.

Yes, but only if I could keep a close eye on them. I would also make sure that they know what is ok and what isn't, as well as instruct them to let me know right away if someone tries to do something inappropriate with them.

No. My hypothetical kids should have a childhood. The parents who push their kids to that are using their kids for a misguided desire for vicarious fame and money. Maybe there are exceptions, but I don't think putting your kids to work like that is a good thing.

Kids under 18 have to be accompanied by an adult 24/7 when on set. I'm thinking it's the private "acting classes" that would cause the biggest issue. An involved parent who sticks around would stop anything inappropriate from happening.

I was about to look for that thread to post this link

LINK

It a copy of the documentary "An Open Secret" about pedophilia in Hollywood. It's suspiciously hard to find. It makes it seem pretty widespread. It took me forever to find it, and I have access to private torrent sites that generally have everything. I couldn't even find it on kodi.

After watching it last night, it seems bad. If I had a kid who really wanted to get into acting, I wouldn't stop them. But I'd be damn certain to be very careful and protective. What some of these parents do is absolutely insane. Sending your kid across the country to live with a guy in his mid 50s, they're asking for their kid to be molested.

I heard about that documentary, looks pretty interesting. I also read last night that apparently the Discovery Channel put something together on the subject a few years back and, not surprisingly, it didn't get aired.

Well, I don't doubt that, but unfortunately the adult is this guy:

Even if you manage to keep them away from the sex predators, fame at an early age can frick you up. I'd be just as concerned about that.
