someone just asked these broadcasters "what does space smell like?"

Space does have a smell. It’s actually one thing every arrival at ISS notes when they are opening the transfer hatch with the trapped space.

quote:

Astronauts describe the smell as a mix of gunpowder, seared steak, raspberries and rum

Primary splashdown site is the orange circle, the green circle off of Panama City Beach is the alternate site. Courtesy of James Spann.

Discovery and Science Channel will provide full coverage of the splashdown at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. ET. The two networks teamed to broadcast the historic launch of the Space X Crew Dragon, with that two-hour live broadcast drawing record ratings for both cable networks.

Coverage also on NASA channel.

NASA tv just said you likely will not be able to see it from shore.

Now the NASA chick is saying you might be able to see the parachutes. Her and the dude are contradicting each other.

Throw in the smell of poon and swap rum for bourbon and that’s basically what heaven could smell like imo. Sounds awesome.

ETA: damnit beat to it sorry

The seven potential splashdown sites for Crew Dragon are off the coasts of Pensacola, Tampa, Tallahassee, Panama City, Cape Canaveral, Daytona, and Jacksonville.
They going to splash down in a shallow lake?

I’m hoping the re-entry profile allows us to hear the sonic boom here in South Louisiana. By the looks of it, should pass over pretty close but I know this isn’t the space shuttle so not sure how hard of angle they hit the atmosphere at on the way down.

the map on the NASA & SpaceX YouTube pages now shows that it's going to be coming up from Bay of Campeche towards splashdown

Hmm that’s weird I figured since the alternate landing site was due east that the re-entry profile would be that way
