PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — Our area of the Gulf Coast will be forever tied to space exploration, NASA and the Space-X programming as the first astronaut splashdown in decades will take place off the Pensacola coast Sunday.

quote:

Behnken and Hurley are ready to return home in Endeavour for a splashdown off the coast of Florida, closing out a mission designed to test SpaceX’s human spaceflight system, including launch, docking, splashdown, and recovery operations.

quote:

NASA and SpaceX are capable of supporting seven splashdown sites off the coast of Florida for the return of Crew Dragon on its Demo-2 test flight with NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley from the International Space Station as part the agency’s Commercial Crew Program. The seven potential splashdown sites for Crew Dragon are off the coasts of Pensacola, Tampa, Tallahassee, Panama City, Cape Canaveral, Daytona, and Jacksonville.

This seems like the sort of thing they should have pinned down more finely than "might" less than 24 hours out.

I'm pretty surprised SpaceX would take such a vanilla approach to landing astronauts

Maybe it is a marketing thing to get several places excited about it or how close is the hurricane?

Oh, that's almost certainly the reason they're going to come down that far West instead of just off the East coast of Florida closer to all of SpaceX's infrastructure. They can target a given patch of the ocean pretty accurately; they land rockets on barges like it ain't nothing. The Dragon has a fair bit of cross-range capability on return. It's a lot more advanced than the Apollo days and even then they were able to land within a couple of miles of where they wanted to. It makes the use of the word "might" funny to me. They're not gonna try for Pensacola and end up in Mobile.

Very much looking forward to this tomorrow. I feel bad for Bob and Doug returning to Earth though.

I can't explain it but I've got a bad feeling about this mission's return to Earth.

Does FloraBama still do the free drinks think if you parachute in? That could make it worth their while.
