Damn. Such a bummer. I actually liked their open seating policy as well. Looks like they got bought out by private equity last year and now are becoming like other airlines. We almost only flew southwest because of getting good prices, points, easy customer service/flight changes, etc.. But now that they’re basically getting rid of all that to become more like other airlines, why do I have loyalty to them anymore? Such a shame. We definitely were big fans of southwest but I guess no need to be anymore.
Yeah we liked them for routine flights back to Louisiana with the kids because of the above policies. Saved a lot with 5 people over the years. Now they offer nothing.

jack up the middle of the terminal with people standing around waiting in lines that they shouldn't even be in.
I guess it's true that the Jetway Jesus (post landing) pre-boards aren't in the middle of the terminal.

What does that have to do with the boarding process mobs every other major domestic carrier creates?
Posted on 3/11/25 at 8:57 am to jlovel7
Ha! 10 of us just booked our September flight to Denver a couple of weeks ago. Suck it, Southwest!! This change will likely mean this will be the last time they will be the first airline our group looks at for our trips.

I will bang this drum until my ears bleed…this is fricking backwards and they had it right the first time.
Charge exorbitant fees for carryon and make checked bags free. All of the BS with boarding is now solved and the airline makes more money
Without as many carrying on there’s less need for the bull rush to board due to limited bin space
I've been beating this same drum for years, my friend. Totally agree.
We should be encouraging large families going to Disney to check their bags. They all carry on because it's like $400 in fees with a large family. Discourage that shite by charging for carry-ons and making checked bags free.
Then we can all deplane MUCH faster because we aren't waiting on 6 kids + grandma to get their roller bags down.

The number of people in wheelchairs boarding SWA 737s far exceed anything most of us have ever seen, even on aircraft that carry 2x as many people. It comes up every two weeks, and it's always about SWA. But to my original point, I guess it makes you happy to have 30+ preboards, because then they're not acting like gate lice, taking every aisle and window seat ahead of the A boarding group. Winning I guess?

Looks like it will go into effect on 5/28.
That’s the interesting part. I have a couple trips ticketed for after this goes into effect that I bought well before this announcement.
I’m tempted to take two bags and raise an issue at the check-in. I “contracted” with SWA under a 2 bags fly free model.

30+ pre boarders is a gross exaggeration
Even if it was 60 you could still find a window or aisle seat
And no need to guess, it makes me happy because the boarding groups are lined near the gate not in the terminal walkway, it's easily and clearly understood, easy to follow and you don't have to walk through dozens of people when it's your time to board because they're standing in the way waiting for their time to board.
The boarding experience with a mid to late A boarding group on Southwest is superior to boarding first class domestic on Delta, American and United

no it isn’t
here’s the best possible boarding experience
1) reserved seat
2) checked bag
3) be the last person to board the plane

This is one of the reasons we chose Southwest often.
this and the sit wherever which they're doing away with as well in the next few years. i prefer that style of seating as long as i'm not by a fatso.
they're literally removing everything that made me loyal to them.

i have absolutely seen a 30+ preboard situation more than once. They finally cracked down and said one parent could board per child.
I was seeing entire families of 8 hispanic or asian families board with one child.

“Now all airlines are Spirit Airlines” - our real Demolition Man future.

Southwest has watched while the big 3 (United, American, and Delta) have grown and made tons of money, while Southwest has been in purgatory.
They used to be known at the cheap airline that treated your right but now they're usually the same price or more expensive than flying one of the big 3, and most people prefer having an assigned seat.
They're also getting handicapped by Boeing's problems which have caused delivery delays for their 737-8 Max and 737-7 Max which still hasn't been certified yet (plane was announced 14 years ago).
I recently flew both Southwest & American and was surprised that every aspect of the experience at American was either just as good or better than Southwest.

Family boarding and pre-boarding are not the same on SW. Pre-barding boards before A1. Family boarding is after the A group but before B1.
Generally, on SW, those who pre-board are allowed one person to assist them but it has nothing to with a child

Such corporate BS. “We are gonna charge more but yall are gonna love it!”
Yall remember when airlines said it was because of high fuel costs back in the early 00’s that made them start doing this?
Yet fuel has dropped since then and they still maintain the fee.
I member.

The statement says for tickets booked on or after 5/28. Doesn’t sound like it’s based on travel date.
