It sounds like majority of their arrangements now are just playing whole notes very loudly.
I've heard them for decades. Their sound has always been blasted whole notes.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed by that clip. None of it.

Which is great for a stadium band.
They aren't trying to sound like an orchestra, they're trying to be entertaining. They do that very well.

I'm not a band person. I'm just more discerning.

I'd hope more than just band people could understand the legitimate criticisms of HBCU bands. I enjoy bands like Southern for what they are, but I'd take a band like UGA or LSU every time.

I'm an older guy. In the 70's and 80's Grambling and Southern Bands were fun to watch. They seem to be worse now than they used to be.
There's a reason for this. High school band programs all over the country aren't as strong as they used to be. We once had the strongest school band program in the world and now Japan has taken the lead (far fewer schools and bands, obviously).

I think they sounded pretty good (the video of the show, not in the stands). Much better than Jackson State when they came to MSU in 2009. In the stands, yeah...blatty, sloppy and trying to play too loudly.
I also wish our shows could've been filmed like this. So much better than just a sky view from the box of the whole field.

They're two completely different things.

I'm "band ppl" and I think they are awesome. They may not be as good from top to bottom as the larger bands, but the top musicians are just as good as the ones in other bands. Did anyone hear the screamers in the trumpet section?
This ain't DCI where they play Leonard Bernstein, and 5/4 and 9/8 time signatures. They play 4/4 and 6/8 like Sousa intended.
Like a previous poster said, they aren't there to be an orchestra or win a marching competition. They are there to entertain, and they do that better than most bands in the country.

There's a "SU band >>> LSU band" argument thread like once a week.

people need to realize with musical instruments and entertainment, its not about playing a piece with exact precision, its about putting your own flare on it. is louis armstrong the most precise trumpet player ever? no, but he was able to do his own thing and is a legend.
not to mention, it is much harder to play perfectly when marching show style as opposed to corps style.
southerns band is an institution. 99 out of 100 people would choose to watch them over any other college band.

The emcee or SU announcer on the loud speaker sounded like a fricking infomercial the whole time they were playing .. "often imitated, but never duplicated" ..

Fair enough...to a point. If they're out of tune, it's like knives into my eardrums.

They do put on a good show.

Always glad to see Southern get some national pub, but they need to get rid of the hype man talking over the performance. Let him describe their accolades before or after the performance.

Have you ever marched before? I have. One thing I can't stand is some of the HBU's (and a TON of the high schools that imitate them) that do the "lets see how hard we can blow into the brass instruments" routine. Its sloppy and lazy. Most of the times I've seen Southern, they play a pretty crisp, albeit loud show.
I have a ton of respect for precision marching. Its not easy to get 200 people to march and move in precise time. Doing the score at the half is legit. You can practice random numbers, but getting everyone in sync with little notice is a lot tougher than it looks. That was a fantastic performance.
(I hate to use this example, ugh
