I will say that SULC's evening program fills an important void and you can turn that into something. That is especially true if the job you carry while attending will be upgraded when you graduate or somehow ties to what you want to do (criminal law is a good example).

There are just a vanishingly small number of low end jobs available in the market right now. Hanging your own shingle is always an option, but that is a whole different set of issues to discuss.

Just off a quick google, Non-resident tuition at UGA is 39k. Is that really going to pay off if you just come back to a market where LSU grads get hired on a regular basis?

It's really only 39k for the first year. Drops to half that in year 2 and 3. Assuming they haven't made any changes to the residency requirements in the last year or two.

ETA: and UGA is pretty liberal about giving 1st years instate tuition as a scholarship.

If you can get a deal like that it makes more sense. I just did a quick google search for the tuition on my phone. My only major point is that paying a bunch of money to end up back at more or less the same pool of firms in NOLA doesn't make sense.

If you aren't sure where you want to go, then UGA/Bama will open a lot of doors in the rest of the sunbelt (and some elsewhere). I have known some people who paid way too much to end up right back where they started though. There is something to be said for picking your market and taking the best value for that market. A free (or near free) education at LSU is a really good value for Louisiana even if you get a bit of a bump for a more prestigious school in NOLA.

I can easily counter that with friends who are in biglaw in NOLA or elsewhere earning at the top end of the profession (as far as reliable income). If you honestly think going to a bottom ranked school where you have a 41% chance to pass your home state's bar and won't get a look from any reputable firm in your own backyard is a good idea then good luck.

Some percentage of people are going to frick up coming out of any law school. Even Haaaavard and Yale have kids who end up at PD's offices (see NOLA again). You have a much better chance at getting a worthwhile job out of Tulane than you do out of SULC.

Also I haven't recommended, even once, someone go to Tulane. It worked out very well for me, but there are generally better options based around picking a geographic area to focus on. UGA/Bama and focusing on big sun belt markets is a better decision.

Agree with this. There are some schools that are good choices regardless of where you intend to practice (probably the Top 10-15). After that top tier, my rankings of the value of the next 60-80 or so schools would be completely dependent on your intended market.

I 100% agree that paying out of state tuition for a state school is totally crazy unless you are totally dead set on practicing in that primary market. There are exceptions, of course (UVA, Cal, UCLA, etc.) but no way in hell would I pay 40k a year to go to Bama or UGA unless I had something strong all but lined up in Atlanta or B'ham/Montgomery.

Also, lol at anyone who pays the out of state rate to go to LSU. It's even more expensive than UGA and Bama.

I'm sure there are a couple of poor suckers who are paying 42k/year for LSU.

I know a few of them. It's amazing to me that anyone would do it, but people pay out the arse to go to private tier 3 schools too.

An amazing combination of (a) not even the second best school in their market and (b) basically just as expensive as an Ivy League.

Has he clerked for anyone or worked under anyone with strong ties there?

If so he has a shot.

What are some attributes does he being to the table?

I didn't apply to law school, but I applied to several occupational therapy programs some masters and some doctoral level. Different schools look at different things

Go to southern if you don't mind chasing ambulances or having a shitty government job. The only way you can probably get a decent job out of southern is if you are black and in the top 2 or 3% and are a diversity hire. Other than that, there is no reason for a good firm to hire a 2-3% southern grad than a top 30-40% LSU grad.

Some people make a lot of money chasing ambulances though so whatevs

Dont be a lawyer. there are way too many. Law schools pump more out than there is work. Unless your bud likes fixing family traffic tickets and handling friends divorces.

Southern would be far from my first choice, but a good number of the judges in our district came out of there. And, after that first job, you rarely get asked where you graduated. Take it for what it's worth.

The general rule is that LSU/LOYNO/Tulane provide substantially more job opportunities than Southern. That said, there are exceptions to the rule and someone can do well at Southern and become gainfully employed. However, the odds are not in your favor.

Even at LSU/LOYNO/Tulane, the job stats are low and it's a tough market for attorneys. Unless you are top of your class or know someone, there are no guarantees of a job upon graduation. Taking into account debt/3 years of income lost, I would say 90% of people who attend law school could make the same amount of money coming out of undergrad as they would coming out of law school.

Southern is a good option for those who are non-traditional students and would need to take classes part time. Overall, if you go to law school, I would not go if your only motivation is to make more money. If you are successful in law school and can get a good job in this awful market, you would likely do well in other industries too without the added debt/risk of no job.

Yeah. That's exactly their role in things. You know any Tulane grads itching to go back to Rayville or Alexandria or any of the 62 other parishes in our state besides Orleans & EBR? They all need criminal defenders, district attorneys, judges, injury attorneys, family law attorneys and so on... Southern grads happily fill many of those jobs.

I'm not suggesting SULC grads are limited to rural/government work, but there are plenty who enjoy it.

Dont confuse arrogance for pettiness, they are pissed that they dont make any money and the frustration builds over the years.

At a depo recently the defense lawyer kept reminding me he went to Stanford and was nice enough to let me know it probably cost around 500k. I thanked him for the info and told him that would be about the amount of my fee for the instant case, and I was right.
