That seems unworkable, but I'd be happy with making the breed illegal and having them die out. Or severe penalties for owners in these situations.

I need some more details honestly. The old lady obviously shouldn't have a dog at this point, but I can also see a world where the dog assumed intruder and hurting the owner.
I had a chocolate lab that was nice as all hell, but if she thought someone was breaking in she would have ripped their throat out with zero hesitation.

It sounds like they showed up to the house with the old lady. If your dog is too stupid to distinguish that versus someone breaking in, then it should be put down. If a person cannot control their dog simply by voice command, they shouldn't have that dog.

We have a 85lb German Shepherd. If he attacked a child, I would kill him myself.

There's still a difference. With German shepherds or other dogs, it's always just a shitty owner. With pits, it's always a shitty dog and usually a shitty owner.
I have a German shepherd, he's 13 now and unfortunately on the last leg of his life. He has never even growled at a person. He's great with all dogs as well. In his old age, if a pup won't leave him alone, he will do a couple loud barks and a bit of a growl when he's ready for them to leave him alone, to scare them off a bit. It works every time, and that's that.

We try to do that with feral hogs that destroy crops, I think we can give it a run with a violent breed that often tries to destroy human life.
Make it a felony to own one and offer free rides to the gas chamber or firing squad.
Those that choose save their fur babies will be forced to keep them inside or face incarceration.

German Shepherds get a bad name. People see them attacking criminals as police dogs and assume they are aggressive by nature. They aren't. They're working dogs. Pits are aggressive by nature, it's in their DNA and I'm all for eradicating them.
