The creation of a clandestine radio station is much more specific than your original claim and is certainly not the first occurrence of "manipulation through the control of radio stations". Thus, the link you provided only disproves your original claim. I admit, I don't know the first example of this specifically for radio, but the state controlled radio stations of European totalitarian states in the early-mid 20th century are clear examples that occurred before the CIA's existence. As for newspapers, a prime example would be the manipulation done by William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer at the turn of the century. Combined, the two men owned most of America's large newspapers and strongly manipulated their content for their own gain. Hearst's exaggerate claims in his newspapers regarding the sinking of the USS Maine is a prime example. Many historians believe this strongly fueled American's negative views towards Spain which led to the Spanish-American war in 1898.

Media existed LONG before radio stations. And, as you state, have been manipulated but that IS NOT WHAT I SAID. I was specifically referring to the purchasing of radio stations, through front corporations and individuals, and then utilizing them to run psy ops and "fake news" (a much more recent term) for the purpose of manipulating THE MEDIA. Hell, AM Radio didn't even exist until late 1890's / early 1900's. First commercial radio station wasn't until 1920.

WWII saw the use of broadcasts but that was in wartime. Not to mention, if you want to talk about wartime efforts, then that would have been the OSS who became the CIA anyway. We are obviously talking about peacetime covert subversive manipulation and that started POST WWII which, coincidentally, aligns nicely with the establishment of the CIA in 1947. I stand by my statement that the CIA were the front runners in the practice of media manipulation through broadcast radio and newspaper ownership. Yes, there were uses of newspapers by non-state actors but thats not really different than a single reporter exerting bias. It's different, at least to me, when a government does it covertly.
