Not too different from when i got pulled over for "speeding" in St.Landry parish. Call the DA office and the charges get dropped to a seatbelt ticket but the fine remains for $150.

Were you speeding?

If so, I don’t understand why you have a problem with this.

Sounds like they did you a favor by lowering it to a non moving violation.

The speeding citation would likely have been a bigger fine and the seatbelt ticket will not affect your insurance rate.

For those thinking he knew he was buying weed, I doubt there was any in it. Whatever your opinion is on weed, that is something he has never been interested in.

If he had $200 on him, he could have walked away and saved a lot of money.

I'm not sure why he would call me to tell me the story and lie. Why call me at all? I didn't give him any money and he only asked me to potentially loan him money if he got in a bind, since he emptied his bank account. Incidentally, he never called back later asking for money. Again, my point in sharing is so people on this board can learn from someone else's bad experiences and plan ahead when traveling and expect the worst in people.

He called because he was potentially in a bind.... what difference does it make if he got in a bind buying tobacco or got in a bind buying weed?

I did and also how to drive a manual transmission. Guess I should have taught him how to do his own oil changes also.

100 % chance they have all done this before and will do it many more times in the future.

What a sting.

They’re just local corrupt police. He should have told them he could only do 250 dollars and they’d likely have accepted

Why didn’t he ask why the vendor isn’t being arrested for selling drugs

That's a more obvious scam than sending gift cards to a dot Indian.

You don't need the "just". If they are cops they are crooked.

If he was alone or with buddies sure, can’t really bolt with your girlfriend around, she may not be able to get out of there.

I would definitely be pressuring the cruise line for a reimbursement

So instead of buying a cigar from one of the shops he bought it from some shady guy on the street? Your kid was buying drugs, and it was probably something heavier than pot which he doesn't need to be on a foreign cruise to get.

Hearing this story is a good lesson. When I’m a foreign country it’s a good idea to have the US Embassy number in your phone. Then if some shady shite like this happens just tell them you’re going to call the embassy so they know where you are and they’ll likely just leave you alone
