Some might consider your complete lack of empathy a mental illness. I do. Surely you are not an a-hole, and disgustingly so, by choice, right?

There is a homeless woman (I say homeless, she may or may not sleep in an abandoned house with no water or electricity) in my town, who has a degree and at one point in her life was successful. Her husband killed her kid, and beat her to the brink of death. Now she spends her days walking miles up and down the road talking to herself. Do you feel sorry for her? Does that story matter? Should she just "decide" to stop being that way?

You have no idea what a "tough" life is.

You are lucky to have a family that gave you a "decent" start, though I don't think you fully appreciate how much more than decent you started out. I don't think you understand how hard it is to get a job and be productive when you have NO support. No family, no friends, no home, no education, few clothes, no transportation, no money in the bank or pockets. Even if this person is mentally stable, who would hire him? Would you? And if he has a mental illness or disability, he has zero chance at making a living. None.

I don't know why you think most (all?) homeless people choose to be homeless. Who in their right mind would choose that life? No one. But most homeless people are not in their right mind.


To want to feel useful and productive is a natural human desire. Those who don't want to feel that way have a mental disorder. They need help.

Empathy is a natural human trait. To not have any is a mental disorder. You need help.
