For me, its not giving to charities or churches.
I feel like a lot of people give to them just to feel better about themselves not really caring where the money actually goes. I'd rather give to something that I know will have a direct impact on someone or something.
You should do some homework before donating. If it looks like a scam then don't donate but it's dumb to base your decision on the sincerity of other donors. Especially when you're just assuming their intentions in the first place.
You just don't want to donate to charity. That's fine but no need to come up with convoluted excuses.

But what about in real life?
If most people I meet I am good at finding a connection with, most people are not assholes..
But on a message board, where you can't hear people's tone and it is easy to assume something different than how the person meant it, and there are a hand full of assholes and then there are people who just follow others and say shite just because its the cool thing to say?

Give me a donation, then. I'll let you know how much impact it has (depending on the amount of your charitable donation) and I'll let you know exactly where the money was spent down to the last penny.

Let me give an example of what I mean.
I don't care why someone gives to a charity as long as the most of what they give goes to directly impact people who need help.
But the problem is, most people don't do their homework and when it comes time to give to a specific charity (like if your place of employment has a certain charity they support, etc), for some people they give something without thinking beyond what they are actually giving to.
To them, it's just about saying to themselves they gave something.
For example, if your employer supports a certain charity an every year they ask everyone to donate. If you have done your homework and know that your donation would be better used to directly impact people than the one your company supports.. Do you still give to that charity just because you don't want to look like an a-hole? Some people do that. They don't care about where it goes to, they just want the acknowledgment of giving.
