Yes, I did know this. My friends father was in the hospital. We visited with him and left. friend forgot something so we go back to the room and he's sitting in bed with a Heineken. They said he could have 2.

I had alcoholic in-laws who were in the hospital. They kept getting busted hiding alcohol in the drop ceiling, so the doctor just wound up prescribing beers. They even wrapped the cans with prescription labels.

I'm sure OP's friend "fell" on whatever it was that necessitated surgery...

I'd hate to see the price of those damn beers. Higher than any stadium.

Friend I grew up with dad is in the hospital for a procedure… I go drop in on him to see how he doing… can you believe the nurses are actually serving him beer??.. not nonalcoholic beers… real damn beers… my friend’s mother can’t hide her anger either…come to find out this is routine for alcoholics(not saying he alcoholic though)

Yes, fairly common. When I worked at Charity we kept a 6-pack of Coors Banquet gold cans for patients going through DT's. Pharmacy doesn't keep a full stocked bar, but they have a variety.

The patient is typically asked their drink of choice, ordered a patient a Jack Daniels and Coke not that long ago.

I know a guy who went in for something and the Dr asked how much he drank. He lied and his wife told the Dr the truth. They had him a case of Miller Lite waiting when he did the surgery.

They used to do that in the 1930s to prevent withdrawals, which could be deadly.

Used to see them bring Budweiser. For alcoholics. The withdrawals could kill them.
