He has a cat, so a 20 guage would be a better selection. I would use 7.5 shot. At 20 feet that will take the fight out of anyone and will do less damage to your house than buckshot.

If you we're banned from owning a firearm and that thug that was going to break into your house had one, you would not have a chance.
It's beyond frightening to think there are people in this country that want that exact scenario.

You have a persistent thief who is not going to stop until he gets inside. He now knows you hear him so he will return when you are not home. He is mad at his two failures and is going to rob you and rub his junk on your pillow when he finally gets in.
If he does come back at night while you are there, do not turn on lights and howl at the moon to make him aware of your presence. Wait in the bathroom with your bat and hit a home run when he comes through the window. This is assuming you are unable to buy a shotgun or security system due to financial inabilities. You have a bat, bought and paid for.
Can you afford a nice Chianti and some fava beans?

1. Good alarm
2. Motion sensor cameras - I love them
3. If you get a weapon learn how to use it, get comfortable with weapon, and be prepared to use it if you have to. Make 110% sure of what you are looking at and willing to shoot is something you want to kill or injure.
4. Get good insurance depending on the state you are in if you shoot and injure or kill someone. Some states is the person is outside the home you should be prepared for a legal battle civil & criminal. Hate to say it but having some insurance will help with legal fees in today's society.

Get a Remington 870. It's a nice pump action shot gun. Affordable. Easy to operate.
Maybe install a motion sensor for that light out in your yard that you mentioned.
There's also some alarm companies that are a pretty good price these days as well. Make sure to buy a censor for that particular window.
