I suspect it's a combination of shitty parenting, mental illness and a bizarre culture of getting attention/adoration/hatred on the internet.
It's premature because we don't even know what this is, but Florida in particular just strikes me as a place where kids can fall through the cracks easily. A huge transient/transplant community, a lot of folks chasing $$ and notoriety at the expense of more meaningful things, etc. It's basically a microcosm of the most vapid parts of American culture.
