It is shitty to hit someone's mailbox and run but I would put it off as they are just having a bad day and let it go.

I hit a neighbors unfortunately very nice mailbox about a year ago. I nailed it and really screwed my car up. It was at night and I knew they were an elderly couple. I chose the wise option and just busted my arse over there the next morning and said I had done it the night before. I also had a handy man I found online ready to roll to fix it. Granted I live in a gated neighborhood with 24 hr controlled access and a security rover. I think I handled the situation well/ethically by fixing my bad. If this person does not come back to fix the problem and you had security footage I would call the police and at least have them pay for it. I paid a lot but better then getting arrested or getting in worse trouble by messing with it at the late time of day I did it.

If you have a very nice mailbox that you want to try to file on your insurance, you might need a police report. Also if you think someone ran over it intentionally or may do it again, you should get a report. Aside from that, I wouldn’t let it bother me anymore and just go ahead and get it fixed.
