and USL was where kids would go to pick their grades up to get back into LSU, or take courses in their curriculum that were too hard at LSU

Perfectly describes half the people I knew my freshman year at LSU.

For LA public schools 2025 US News and World Reports was

179 LSU
296 LA Tech
352 ULM
377 ULL
392-434 UNO

social-media fueled idea that college is about an experience

Dude don’t blame social media for no one wanting to go to UNO. It’s a lower middle class commuter school in a city with a declining population and shite job market. Louisiana has more state schools than Florida and a fraction of the population. Like everything in this state, the entire system is mismanaged.

I’m sure UNO was ranked better when it was in the LSU system, and gets the shaft in the UL system as well.

A few years ago, I called UNO to get a replacement of my degree to put up in my office and the woman warned me that it would say UL system on it, even though I graduated when it was in the LSU system - I said thanks for the warning and I don’t want it now

so where would people who can’t afford to go to Tulane or Loyola or go away to LSU go?

Southeastern or Slow Learners University in Lafayette.

Harvard on the Bayou is also an option.

if a person cannot afford room & board at LSU, I’m going to assume they cannot at the schools you mentioned either.

UNO fills a need that everyone wants to ignore.

Shutting down UNO before SUNO would be a really bad decision. Obviously SUNO is a mess in terms of quality/graduation rates, but I'm pretty sure that UNO damn near has a monopoly on engineering in the city. Tulane and Loyola have some niche 4 year engineering degrees, but if you shut down UNO, then NOLA isn't an option for electrical, mechanical, civil, etc...

Southeastern bringing back football and becoming an actual option for Metairie kids helped sink UNO, along with the Northshore’s growth in general.

Southshore kids will gladly go to Southeastern but I don’t think Northshore kids are going to UNO

I think the only engineering schools in Louisiana are LSU, UNO, Tech, ULL, and Tulane (and Tulane students have to take classes at UNO).

McNeese and Southern also have ABET-accredited engineering programs, FWIW.

Katrina started the slide of UNO. I went to UNO for a few semesters 3-4 years ago. I was told enrollment when I was there was about half of the max enrollment UNO has ever had, which was pre-Katrina.

I lived in the New Orleans area, was interested in an MBA, and Tulane $$$ was astronomical, so UNO was a good fit.

UNO has on campus (or adjacent) housing, and if they’d promote that they’d benefit from it.
