American culture sadly doesn't take care of our elderly like other countries

Every response further proves my point.
All of the “conservatives” on here are willing to reform it only if they get theirs.
It is greed.
They give zero shits about their children.

Disneyworld wouldn’t exist if olds weren’t paying for their grandkids to go

They've been saying this since the late 80s
The whole idea of there actually being a "Social Security Trust Fund" has been a fiction for longer than that.
Fact is, as long as basically every Western/First World nation has something similar (they all do, of course) we will have Social Security.
If I were allowed to cast a vote today to end it and walk away with zilch, I certainly would. I understand reality, though.

It is an impossible task, as we can clearly see from the responses in this thread.

I'm not a boomer, but lots of bashing them in this thread. Ya'll understand boomers didn't start social security, don't ya'll?

Well, sure, but so can Gen X (me), and millennials are now in their mid-40s, even. Plenty of powerful people of all generations. Once boomers all die off, it will probably calm the burden somewhat. I'm not wishing for that b/c only a jack arse would, but once they do, it will ease up our healthcare and ss issues a little. There are just so many of them, hence "baby boomers."
fwiw, I am retired from the fire service, I won't be getting SS, or if I do, it will be small from working side jobs where I did pay in a little. I don't care that I won't get any, just saying.

Without googling, tell me how much you think SS has vs estimates of fraud and abuse
No idea how much SS has, but between Medicare billing scams, money being ciphoned into policitians' pockets, and various other boondoggles, I would guess the amount of fraud and abuse is way, way over a trillion dollars.

If the older generations didn’t plan well enough to survive without that Ponzi scheme, too bad.
I have been paying into it since I was barely a teenager. Nearly 40 years. Why would I be ok with this even though I’m not even factoring it into my retirement income/savings?

Gotta raise the minimum eligibility age too.
Im close to 50. Im not expecting the thieves in dc will actually protect this for me by 62 however im owed this. Im retiring at 62 regardless but it's not fair to move the goal posts on me know. Phase it for younger generations. Its a lot easier pill to swallow to say SS starts at 67 for a 30 yr old than me who is 12 yrs away…

They will cut benefits by raising retirement age.

This is stupid... while am no Boomer fan by any means, they, just like us were forced into that crap program. So your solution is to take all their money from 30-40 years and say frick it, too bad for you?
Any different than they are doing to younger generations?
Locking up equity in their homes
Selling small businesses to PE Firms
Voting for the very shite they opposed when they were young
frick em

This. But I would say that there should be no cap. You continue to pay 6.2% on all W-2 income.
Or....we can stop playing daddy government and let people keep their hard earned money and invest it how they please.
Obviously a wholesale abolishment will never happen, but you should be able to opt into or out of SS. I would happily opt out tomorrow even if it means losing what I've already contributed. Phase this shite out.
