I want it ended so my kids don't get stuck and taxed for the same empty, useless promises. I've been preparing for decades that SS will not be paying me any money in retirement. Everyone else should too.
Exactly.
I completely agree, but good luck trying to get rid of it

So you’re going give me back all the money I put into it over the years plus interest? If not frick off.

call me what you want, but I want every fricking penny I had confiscated from my income plus interest. It can be a lump sum, or it can be in installments. I never volunteered for this nor was I given a choice. Pretty sure I've been sacrificing for years.
You're proving his point so hard right now

They've been saying this since the late 80s

Penn Wharton is a completely left leaning outfit. Of course they want to raise taxes

Kill the social security tax cap, where social security stops being witheld at $175k(?) last I checked.

I am ok with that if I get refunded everything I contributed plus the average the market has increased every year since 1986 when I first paid social security taxes.

Stop the wars. Make all these billionaires pay their fair share. Eliminate the IRS and go to a flat tax system. Done in multiple countries throughout Europe.
Seriously:
Many experts point to a simple fix: raise or eliminate the payroll-tax cap so high earners contribute on all their income, just like everyone else. Paired with basic efficiency reforms, this alone could close most of the long-term shortfall. Social Security doesn’t need cuts — it needs an update.

I'd rather not be taxed on it, but I'm not even close to being able to receive it.
Posted on 3/20/26 at 1:56 pm to TigerintheNO
Just give me all my money I paid in plus interest and then shut it down.
Posted on 3/20/26 at 1:57 pm to TigerintheNO
What’s complete BS about that is that i could have taken all the social security i have paid into since i was a teenager till now and had it in a 401k/roth and done exponentially better than social security

186 million people paying into SSI aren't going to all agree to cut their losses and move on. We can't even agree on if dudes can use female bathrooms.
I’ll accept that I am almost certainly going to face increasingly higher taxes for the rest of my life to pay interest on the national debt and keep social security if olds shut the frick up about Starbucks and avocado toast

The current cap on earned income for SS is $184,500. If the cap was kept, but began again at $500,000 of w-2 income, the plan would be self-sufficient well into the future. The weanies on both sides are scared to do this. Most American pay on 100% on the salaries.
This. But I would say that there should be no cap. You continue to pay 6.2% on all W-2 income.

They've had decades to elect representatives to do this. Decades.
Same could be said for numbers of people voted in.... how many turncoat their constituents once they got in?
I do blame the voters on a lot. But I don't recall seeing any person in a political seat talking about Social Security outside of funding it over and over.

They are going to have to refund people in some capacity to avoid people over 65 riots.
What are they going to do? Burn down a luby’s or Cracker Barrel?

SSDI is processed through Social Security office but it's totally different funding.
