"hey you know how everyone jokes about midnight basketball in high crime inner cities as a pathetic solution to murderous thugs? Let's go with that."
It really is about as racist of a solution as one could possibly come up with. "If you don't want them black youths running around thugging up the town, just throw them a basketball". It's literally what they are saying.

They are coming for Stone Mountain. It doesn't help that what little remains of the Klan keeps having rallies there and bringing attention to the confederate generals carved on the side.

As a resident in the metro area, you hear about the crime a lot. I personally have never witnessed or experienced anything violent because I typically hangout in Marietta, Alpharetta, Smyrna, Vinings, Roswell, JC, and such. I just don't have the desire to hangout in the city. I can get great food, atmosphere, and fun without having to go downtown and deal with parking. I have a few girls that I hangout with that live in midtown and it is cool as well, but I don't like dealing with traffic and over priced parking.

Having all the pools open and free is actually a sneaky-good way to lower the overall crime rate. Smart.

Drowning rates about to increase.

To be fair, Dickens just took office in January and is trying to clean up Bottom's mess, and she left a hell of a big one. He needs more than 4 months to clean this up.

What became of the cop who shot and killed the guy who beat him up and took is taser? Has he gone to trial yet? Hell, did they rebuild the Wendy's that got burned in "protest"?

Do these "leaders" really believe the garbage they spill or are they purposefully ignoring the real issues? I always lean toward purpose, but I'm starting to wonder if they legit believe basketball will have an effect on crime.

The reality is you don't realize it when you're living there, for the most part. If you live in an old Buckhead neighborhood, Virginia Highland, etc. It's not something where you are constantly in fear of being robbed. Car break-ins happen, but I don't even think it's like some places where everyone you know has had one. You go to your restaurants and developments, which are probably safer than average, and you probably just don't run into issues often.
But, when you leave and go out to Alpharetta, Roswell, etc. you'll start to notice. You're not looking over your shoulder, you don't have 1000 felons driving through your area every day, nextdoor is boring, it's quieter, etc.

The approach is two-fold for these type leaders. These "efforts" allow for it to appear as though they are actually doing something while at the same time offering more free stuff to the "community", thus not alienating the very group that causes most of the problems they are trying to "fix".

VaHi, Inman Park, Midtown, all traditionally "Safe" expensive intown neighborhoods, no longer true. Expensive still true. Safe not true. Been going down hill for a while. If you are the kind of person who is in bed by 10:30 every night it may not be as noticeable. My good buddy lived in Inman for years, we always felt safe walking to Little 5 or North Highland if we were in groups, but nobody does that anymore because there is a better than 10% chance you'll be mugged, and the cops will not even stop the shady looking criminals anymore, they will stop the white hipsters and tell them to get their arse in an Uber.
