No dispute here. As I said, I know nothing about ADD or ADHD and don't claim to.

However, in my personal experience with kids who are on some type of med for ADD or ADHD, it is simply because their parents want them to behave and put them on medication to make that easier on the parents. In lieu of actual parenting.

I'm not talking about an individual case either. I know multiple sets of parents that run to the dr to get pills because little jimmy is just to hard to handle. It's sickening.

Nope...I'm acting like the parents who actually observe their kids struggling for years should dig deeper to find out what is going on.

Who knows how other people’s brain work? I never thought concentration was something we are born with, I figured I was just smart enough not to need it. I should be working....

Sure don't. And if a kid has ADHD or ADD I'm sure it's hard or impossible to teach them these skills.

But if they don't. Then they need to be taught these skills and not medicated.

I’m convinced my son has sensory processing disorder, but my whole family thinks it’s terrible to diagnose a kid with something like that...so we just let it be and deal with school by making him suffer through it. He’s a bad arse athlete though, so how could anything be wrong???

We haven't started sports yet with him, or medicated him yet for that matter, he's only 6.
I can tell you that for me, it turned me into an absolute monster on the field. I was 110% every second of a game. Hyperfocus, no fear, welcomed collisions and physical contact like it was a drug. It's ABSOLUTELY a PED.

Mine covers his ears ALOT. Whether it's a vaccuum or a bathroom hand dryer, he hears a loud noise and it becomes a severe anxiety. I understand for sure.

Well, the number of currently diagnosed AND on medication is well over 12% so, obviously, we have a problem. Given that it is unlikely that 100% of those who do have it have been diagnosed, we are looking at likely a 3:1 "bullshite:Real" ratio.

And, that's before we get to the reality that not ALL ADHD is bad enough to need drugs. This means, there's a pretty decent chance that for every kid we are drugging that really NEEDS it, there's a pretty good chance that at least 4 are just being drugged to keep them in line.

Many kids with high functioning autism are incorrectly diagnosed as ADHD, this would add to the missing percentage, but like I said I agree that some are just hyper kids. Its not about hyper, an ADHD child suffers from mental hurdles you will never understand. You are hurting an ADHD child by not treating it properly, fact. If that means 4% are misdiagnosed fine, we all dislike those parents, but the people who assume that it's this big consipiracy or a fake disease are just ignorant.

He is 6. He has textbook overactive sensory disorder which is very common with ADHD.
We aren't as worried about this as much as his focus and anxiety issues. Discipline is not lacking and he is very well behaved.

Well, couple of things. 1. You are hurting SOME who actually may need drugs. Not all ADHD kids do. 2. This may come as a shock to the world, but a LOT of ADHD children were raised quite nicely before Ritalin was invented.

Um. if only 5% of kids are really ADHD at all, and you drug 4% of children for no fricking reason, then yeah, that's a pretty damned big deal! LOL

Meh. I don't think it's organized or anything.

But, there's simply no doubt that the availability of the diagnosis and drugs is an attractant to parents and the $$ involved is an attractant to enough mental health professionals that you don't need a "conspiracy". Market forces are enough by themselves.

So. Frankly. I stand by my original post. When I bump in to a parent who says their kid is ADHD, the numbers seem to indicate that they probably aren't.

That's your opinion, we all have one. Mine is based on experience, yours on perception and social stigmas. An untreated child with ADHD is more likely to go to prison than get into college, fact. Impulse control is a major factor with ADHD that only medication and therapy can combat.

Well, not for nothing, but it's supported by YOUR numbers.

No, it was based on your numbers.

You are the one who told me that 5% of children's brain scans show it.

Well, more than 12% are currently drugged for it. Just sayin.

Actually its 11% not more than 12% and considering up to 12% are on some level of the spectrum, that doesn't sound outrageous. If 5% are ADHD and 5% are other spectrum children, that would leave 1% of "fake diagnoses". ADHD is much closer to Autism than people give credit for.

In general, yes.

Not all kids are the same, some are very hyper. Schools like them docile or drugged.

Um, I see you found the same Google I did. Is it your assertion that you think that despite climbing from 7.8% in 2003 to 11% in 2012, that you think it froze at the 2012 number? I mean...........mmkay.

This assumes that 100% of the people who are really ADHD get diagnosed AND that an equal number of Spectrum people are misdiagnosed as ADHD. Well frick, talk about cooking the books.

Dude. Just stop. Most kids on ADHD meds aren't ADHD. Your own numbers prove it.

I should add that if you really believe that there are many misdiagnosed Spectrum kids as ADHD, then, you're pretty much arguing my point for me.

You're so witty and cool bro! What does it matter how many kids are misdiagnosed? How does that affect your life? You get off on being an internet badass, we get it. You're a clown, congrats.

It should matter to many.

ADHD drugs are no joke. Drugging children just to make them behave when they don't actually need the drugs is pretty abhorrent.

People really should care about other people beyond just what affects us directly. Just sayin.

I get that you're vested in this issue. And, that's fine. But, the facts supported my point.

Also. You'll note that NOWHERE in this thread did I say "don't help kids with actual problems" so, I don't even know why it makes you mad. You want kids with ACTUAL problems helped. So do I.
