This is where you are WRONG.
The ADHD brain requires constant stimuli, there are several studies showing music increases test scores of ADHD kids merely by keeping their brain from wandering. An ADHD child moves because his brain is telling him he has to. Whipping him is literally punishing a child who did nothing wrong. Society thinks kids should be adults, thats the real fricking probem IMO.

95% is bullshite (those same ADD/ADHD kids can play video games or on their phones for hours one end).

Which is due to the constant stimuli the game is providing to their brain.

90% of the people in this thread have no clue what they're talking about.

….is actually blood pressure medicine and a non-stimulant.

It is also called InTuniv and is something that suits a specific set of issues WITHOUT going the speed route.

Don't group them all.

Teacher: Little Jimmy needs med since he can't sit still for an hour during class.

Me: Yeah, he's 8 fricking years old. I don't know where you got your medical degree but 8-year-old boys don't sit still for very long.

And given time school, class, work, etc can provide stimuli to their brains. Many of these boys just have not matured yet. Thank god my parents didn't put me on anything when everyone thought I should have been. Once I matured so many ("boring") things stimulated my brain.

Parents and teachers fill out forms with rankings for certain characteristics or actions.
While this is part of the diagnosing they are also subjected to a full day of testing in a psychologist office. And some psychologist do not put them on medicine, they try to do therapy only and get the kid to cope with it in real life.

we think abnormal behavior is now normal

but, there is a massive difference in neurological disorders and behaviors.

there are little ones out there who are seen as "bad" but could be afflicted with numerous issues not called ADHD/ADD. do a little research on the various conditions and things become alarmingly clearer.

Congrats, you don't have ADHD.
That doesn't work for ADHD kids.
Try again.

bingo

and psychiatrists (and pediatricians) won't see or prescribe anything without a full psychological workup that includes a vast array of cognitive tests. those that do script without a workup are misguided at best.

Beyond ADHD/ADD is the alarming amount of children who fall on the spectrum and are brushed off as troubled youths.

I could have easily been diagnosed with it and many pushed me to be.

It's not bullshite at all. The thing I think is bullshite is that parents think going to a psychiatrist and pumping pills in their kid is what will "fix" them when there are behavioral therapies out there that actually help them.

This. We avoided putting our son on meds for ADHD. We did occupational therapy, we did sit down therapy, we changed his diet. None of it made any difference. Finally, and very reluctantly, we put him on meds. It has been a night and day difference. We were worried it would make him a zombie and would totally change him. All it does is calm him down enough to focus and remain still in class. It's made a huge difference in his conduct and class grades. Now, by the time he gets home he's like a dog that's been caged all day. Which is fine with us. It also affects his eating habits, but he makes up for it on the weekends. We do not dope him up on the weekends, or during the summer.

We have turned it from something that can be mostly corrected with discipline into a real disorder.

90% of this thread fits this statement. They wouldn't last a week with my child. "I dont understand why beating him all the time doesn't work, durrrr"

...and said teacher can be fired for suggesting/recommending medications without being even remotely qualified.

Since when did teachers go from molesting students to being MDs? Yay. Stereotypes.

I have twins with ADHD...

Would you like to babysit them when they're off their meds...

Everyone keeps talking about kids sitting still, it's not about that. It's about their lack of focus and concentration.. When our kids are on their meds, their homework and study habits are completely different, in a good way.

Is it overdiagnosed? - Yes

Is it also a legitimate condition? - Yes

Not only is ADD/ADHD real, and measurable. There are multiple forms which can be observed through SPECT imaging.

Yep and any pediatrician who will put your child on meds without all that testing is a dr. to run from.
