Some really miserable people here. I'm glad my neighborhood isn't like this - sure, we are a popular spot for groups of kids that don't live here, but it's just candy for frick's sake.
I happily hand out candy to groups of kids getting dropped off and getting back in the car, or even older kids w/o costumes. You never know someone's situation, and I'm glad our neighborhood is an inviting and safe place for kids who might not otherwise get the experience. They aren't asking to be written into your will, they just want a couple of mini-sized candy bars.
The good person in me refuses to believe that most of your scrooges aren't full of shite just for the sake of keeping your cool keyboard reputation up.

I don't really care who comes trick or treating in my neighborhood as long as we get more than like 5 kids this year. I bought a lot of candy, so hopefully last year was just an off year since they moved Halloween.

Individual people can do what they want. If the thought of outside, underprivileged children dressing up and asking for candy bothers you so much, then go out to eat for the night or turn your lights off. I've never heard of a neighborhood mandating everyone participate. 
The only purpose of my post was that I'm glad I'm not a miserable frick and I'm proud to live in an area that seems very generous to all, residents and non-residents.

Meh. I live in an apartment. My daughters shouldnt have to trick or treat at an apartment complex just because thats where we live. Call my trashy if it makes you feel good but my girls are going to have a fun time regardless.

Always fluctuated for me - I bought 3 huge bags the first year in my house and barely went through one. Only bought 2 the next year but I had to start getting stingy on the later crowd so I wouldn't run out.
I'm taking my 2.5 year old tonight, so I'll be that sucker who leaves a full bowl out on the doorstep - I'll come back and check on it periodically to refill it after I'm robbed blind

No one is forced to do anything, but it really all depends on where you life. There are neighborhoods that have a lot of trick or treaters.. People enjoy seeing the kids dressed up and having fun... Like everything else in life, its not perfect, you will have some people who might be a little too old or whatever, but they are few and far between. Why should people shut everything down just because a few people don't stick to the tradition?
