Name every state you have physically visited outside of an airport or major city in the last four years.
The only states I haven't been in the rural areas of are Maine, North Dakota, South Dakota, Alaska, Hawai'i.

The issue with modern Democrats is that they are so stuck in racial identity politics that they miss out on numerous communities that could replace their losses in the rust belt. I believe in the theory that many rust belters are only GOP because they Left has leaned to far into globalization.
Well stated.
The old Rockefeller Republicans are now establishment Democrats. Also why Mittens didn't do very well on the Rust Belt but DJT did. It will be intetesting to see if DJT was an aberration or the beginning of a realignment.

These are good people who happened to just be on the wrong end of the economic bell curve. I wish Republicans would understand that sometimes welfare based programs are a good thing so long as they they are 1)time limited
2)serve a specific need leading to independence
Many Republicans and even conservatives have been espousing these values since the 1980s. Jack Kemp was big on this sort of thing.
They have always, seemingly, been shouted down by Democrats and those who support them in media. They claim the Republicans are "only for the rich" that they "want to starve the children" or "deny seniors their medications, throw them out of their homes" and whatever other heinous-sounding accusations they can fabricate. They did this in the 1980s, they did it after the Republicans took Congress in the 1994 election, and they do it to this day when any kind of spending limitations are discussed, or even when proposals to NOT INCREASE spending are floated.
Baseline budgeting, look it up. When is a budget cut NOT a budget cut?

He's actually the culmination of the realignment.

President Clinton and Speaker Gingrich did a lot of great things for this country.

You've been to 45 states within 4 years?

Maybe. Maybe the Democrat's identity politics aren't particularly popular with poor white people in the rust belt and Appalachia either? For some reason the white privilege message may not be resonating

They just need to double their efforts on selling the "white privilege" angle

Probably because when those spending limitations are discussed, they heavily target seniors, the poor, and the disadvantaged. They never talk about cutting military spending or cutting corporate subsidies and tax credits. Just last week the White House announced cuts to SNAP benefits, just months after they paid billions of dollars in farm bailouts as a result of their trade war. Those subsidies eclipsed the auto industry bailout a decade ago, and those subsidies came out of the same budget that SNAP benefits do.
Some of the criticisms from the left are definitely hyperbolic, but they're not always completely off base.

East Carroll Parish is poor as hell. Lake Providence is nowhere near what it used to be.

Maybe, or maybe the white identity politics employed by Trump and the GOP resonate with them more. The same white identity politics Nixon and Reagan employed with their Southern Strategy.
More likely is it's a combination of the two.

Mississippi Delta region =/= the Mississippi River delta. Changes in fishing industry don’t much impact a region between Memphis and Vicksburg where agriculture has been primary ‘industry’.
The Delta region is the delta of the Yazoo River.

I thought that Dayton, OH, was a vibrant little city! Wrong.
Very sad.
I was born and raised in Dayton. It's really sad to see how it has deteriorated. It used to be a very nice city but, as another poster said, it's economy was heavily invested in manufacturing. NCR and Mead Paper were headquartered there along with Big 3 auto plants, Frigidaire, Harrison Radiator, etc. Now all of these have moved to other states or overseas.

Athens/Athens County is coal country as it borders with W. Virginia. Tough sledding in that part on the country. I have family in W. Virginia that have been coal miners for generations. A lot of them have fell on hard times.

I think many, not all, Republicans actually do support this. Remember, these are the people who give a lot to charity. The ones who go by the phrase "handup, not handout".
being out of work for 6 months and getting assistance doesn't make one a welfare queen, by any definition.

Back in the ninties, OU was THE party school in Ohio.
It would be sad to know if that has changed do to enrollment.

I looked up their enrollment the other day and it was like 29k. Was it previously higher? LSU's is about 32k for comparison. That's a much bigger school than I expected.
