East Carroll Parish is poor as hell. Lake Providence is nowhere near what it used to be.

I would say there is a massive income discrepancy near the lake.

You're either 400k a year or less than 12k. There is very little in between up there.

The local grocery store is said to be too expensive by the locals, but one if the cheapest private stores I've ever been to.

People are definitely hurting up there.

this thread is amusing. i did my masters at OU, and its really a beautiful campus. t

also, as someone who has spent considerable time in both places, ohio is far better than louisiana overall...and i think ohio sucks arse.

Isn't Louisiana pretty poor? It's a little odd that a state that ranks last in just about everything is so quick to give their money to someone else.

Louisiana's problem is all wrapped around one thing. Politics. Nothing happens unless it is benefitting someone in office. And you can't get nothing done, unless you know people in office.

I know that is a factor just about anywhere, but Louisiana takes it to the next level.

I'll used legalizing gambling as an example. New Jersey legalized gambling and it is paying off huge for the state.. Because people from New York City are flocking into New Jersey to place their bets.

Being next to Texas.. Houston being a 2 hr drive to Lake Charles.. A if sports gambling was legal in Louisiana, it would bring a lot of out of state money into the state.. But... the truck stop casinos lobbied against it. The Louisiana Family Forum.

I am not sure how sports gambling would interfere with the truck stop casinos that is nothing but a big room with video poker machines. The people playing poker machines are not going to stop playing video poker in order to bet on sports.

This issue was even voted on by parish and most parishes passed it.. Yet, despite the fact WE voted for it didn't mean anything. While in session they just waited until the last minute to address it.. They put something up to vote, but they didn't have time to work something out, which was done on purpose by those who didn't support it. They just wasted time until session came to an end and that was that..

I actually believe this state has a lot of potential, but its hard to change things.

It's a sad place up there. We rented a 4bd lake house for under 500 bucks for a week. The dock alone probably cost 50k...

Sad.

That part of Ohio is west West Virginia. Industrial base collapsed. It’s the poster child of what Trump talks about when he says we’ve lost our American jobs. Athens is actually a little better off because of Ohio University.

Even if the jobs come back (some of them are), it's unlikely that they return to smaller towns where a large portion of the working population has either left town or couldn't pass a drug test.

In most cases, those towns are completely fricked.

Are you asking if its Miami (OH)? If so, the school being referred to as Ohio is the University of Ohio, which is not Miami OH.

It's a viable example but wouldn't make a ton of money for the state. I'm pro sports betting btw.

We need to simplify the tax code and rewrite the state constitution. We need to make the state more business friendly and go scorched earth on violent crime. I don't see much of this ever happening though.

That's happening all over the country. We are an information and service economy now. We still have some manufacturing etc but it doesn't drive the economy. Jobs are clustering around mid sized and large cities more than ever before. It's a little sad imo.

If BR had a single hospital system it would probably be number 1. Then LSU and probably Turner not sure which one would be #2.

As it is LSU and BR General and OLOL are probably all in the top 4 or 5.

Government dependence replaced coal mining and other jobs in Appalachia. This goes back to the 60s.

Mostly free education based programs. I think a workfare system would do wonders for a place like that.

you can teach these people to code but no major employers are going to these middle of nowhere towns

It’s over for the vast majority small towns
