I have a lot of family from Ohio, and well...I have to agree with this.

I like Cleveland and some parts of Cincy, but the rest kind of sucks.

Frickin' Alario was at the Heisman ceremony??

I went from tearful and happy to thoroughly disgusted and angry at that very moment. It was like they had allowed a den of thieves in there. Wasn't Bill Nungesser there too?

Well. Arky is a special kind of a shite as well but yes I can confirm Ohio is kinda arse.

Dayton is a smelly shite hole with nothing going on. Great public hiking everywhere but that’s about it.

Cincy sucks too outside of the sympthony and pops orchestra which is one of the tops on the country I believe.

Lived in both areas and in between. Can’t wait to be done with this state after I get my PT degree.

Yet their "swing state" mentality gives them so much political power.

I agree. I worked for a company based in Columbus and went up a couple of times for training. Seemed like a nice town. Would have problems with the weather this time of year, but went once in the Spring and it was great.

It is interesting that in every presidential election since 1972, Ohio has voted for the winning candidate.

Ohio has many different regions. Athens is definitely Appalachia just on this side of the river.
And while NAFTA/Globalization has hurt a lot of Ohio, the Rust Belt is really the stretch between Cleveland / Pittsburgh.
That is Youngstown / Warren area. But a least the cost of living is low. I'm not too sure it could get much lower.

I thought that Dayton, OH, was a vibrant little city! Wrong.

Very sad.

Can confirm. I spent a few months working on a project 60 miles to the southwest of Athens in Ashland, KY a few years ago.

I've worked all over that area too, years ago. Warren, Youngstown, Parkersburg, Ripley, WV.

Gallipolis, Ironton and Portsmouth are way worse than Athens. Then cross over to WV and it's even worse.

This area is a lot worse then Eastern Kentucky. The opioid epidemic is large here and it is depressing. Portsmouth only has the hospital and a tiny college.

I've seen more rebel flags hanging on the outside of houses in Southeast Ohio compared to Northern West Virginia. On the redneck scale Southeastern Ohio ranks pretty high.

Nothing beats those Eastern Kentuckians and Southern West Virginians though.

That's the area a lot of my family is from. Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Warren, etc. Those places were struggling long before NAFTA came along, but that certainly didn't help.

Lulz, Cincy is home to Procter and Gamble, Krogers, GE (build engines for airlines, 5/3 Banking, Great American, one of the best children’s hospital in the nation. Cincinnati also is one of the few cities in the country that supports professional and college teams.

The longest project that I was ever assigned to when I traveled for work was in Akron.

Akron is a hit or miss city but it's not really in the heart of coal country like Athens. Canton was pretty nice. Warren and Youngstown were pretty depressing.

Ashland, Kentucky is a dump. Ashland Oil was headquartered there until it moved to Lexington. Only thing Ashland has is the hospital and Marathon Refinery 10 miles south of town. AK Steel shut down 5 years ago.

That whole triangle region of Portsmouth, Ashland , and Huntington is depressed and poor.

Oh yeah, Akron is the rubber capital. At one time, Firestone, BF Goodrich, and Goodyear(and maybe others?) were all headquartered there. My grandpa worked for Goodrich for years, and I used to spend a month in Akron every summer.

Warren and Youngstown had GM plants, and a lot of GM suppliers. That area had a large union presence through the 60's and 70's. It started slipping when unions started losing their power and influence.

THE fact is that our politicians allowed over 70,000 manufacturing factories to move to China in the last 30 years. It’s devastating to our country. They all should languish in prison for life for selling us out. This is the only reason and should be fixed immediately. Zero American companies should be in China. Zero !!!!
