It gives you the ability to boost your testing capabilities, which is key to limiting the spread, all the models that are out of control are assuming you can't isolate cases, which you can with plentiful and rapid testing. That is the key to keeping it under control, along with keeping the most susceptible in isolation.

This is what the most successful places have been able to do.

You drag your crusty arse outside and if you see your own shadow you have to go back in quarantine for three more weeks.

It’s a good thing that only a handful of the population thinks critically like you do, otherwise the panic would be much more widespread! We’ll just be living a couple weeks at a time. A couple weeks like this, a couple more weeks after that, Normal life will resume in a couple weeks, nvm make that a couple more weeks. Pretty soon it’s August

Won’t it just delay when the huge spike comes?

If Americans respond as intelligently as South Koreans then no, it will be over, with a few fires to put out occasionally.

So likely yes, it will just delay the huge spike; and we'll wreck the economy and kill a bunch of people.

Yep. This is the reality. We just need to accept the reality of the situation and quit rationalizing our bad decisions.

IMO hope is that this buys time to bolster the capabilities and capacities of our healthcare system across the country enough to combat this thing, and to get massive testing in place.

My hope is that we can get everything in place, upscale testing, quarantine those that are particularly susceptible to the virus, and start getting the economy moving again. With enough testing in place you can do much smaller, more targeted quarantines when new outbreaks pop up and our healthcare system can handle a larger load.

I wish the government would come out and be transparent about the long-term play here because right now all of the uncertainty feeds people's frustrations and fears.

The government will realize that their cash cow(the economy) is suffering immensely and they’ll let/make us all go back to work. Duh. You can bite the hand that feeds you, but don’t chew the whole arm off!

That's sort of the idea. Hopefully it'll be less of a spike but even if it is we will have had 2-3 weeks longer to put infrastructure and supplies in place, as well as hopefully have a better understanding of how to cure it.

The pandemic will still be going strong when they tell us the shelter in place order is over but they'll be better positioned to deal with it.
