I don't agree with your perspective, but I do agree that this is the inevitability. I haven't lost hope that the experts are giving up and just trying to save the hospital system and prevent street deaths. I do think that is one thing we are trying to avoid, but I definitely don't think it's the entire objective.

I really beg people to go listen to the NUMEROUS podcasts out there where epidemiologists and doctors explain in very simple terms what is about to happen. There are so many rumors and they have concrete evidence. For those who are unwilling to take a couple hours and listen to these guys, I'll try to regurgitate as best as I can without spreading false info.

This is coming from two places, one of them from Dr. Sanjay Gupta, neurosurgeon and chief medical correspondent for CNN as well as Dr. Ashish Jha, director of Harvard GHI.

The most important, and possible disconcerting fact about this situation is that nobody really knows anything beyond what is happening right now and has happened. There are predictions, but they are just that; predictions.

Dr. Jha seems to have an optimistic outlook that people will start to take this seriously in the States. He was very concerned about the Trump administration's initial response, but did admit that in his eyes they have done a good job ever since the "hoax" comments. Testing will tell us more, and we are a couple weeks behind knowing what our numbers are. And by the time we know our numbers from last week, we won't know what we are currently dealing with. That is why staying at home is so very important for the next couple of weeks.

He also seems to believe that sports are over for the next 6-12 months. He expects the virus to die off after this initial quarantine as we get into the summer months, but once the Fall hits he thinks it will re emerge and shutdowns will happen once more. All of this, however, depends on your locality. The situation in Boston will differ from the situation in Chicago, will differ from the situation in New Orleans, etc. Expect school to either be done for the year, or many more shutdowns between now and the end of the year, into Fall.

Basically, deal with the reality. The quicker we deal with the reality of this situation, the quicker we can be done with it. He seems to believe that life will not return to normalcy until we have a vaccine, which he puts near the end of the 1st quarter of 2021. Worst case scenario has us losing 2 million Americans to this virus. He seems to think that we will come out much stronger, just based on the attitude shift in the past week. He is concerned about young people's attitudes, but overall optimistic.

Gupta addresses the idea that this virus may have been around early January. He actually doesn't dismiss it. He says he doesn't believe that that is the case, but he says it is certainly possible. He also states that it is absolutely possible that some older people may have succumbed to this disease already and it just wasn't reported as anything more than your normal respiratory death. Again, he is not spouting these as truths, he just acknowledges that it is not impossible or outlandish.

You all need to be prepared for a mindset shift. This is a real virus. It is not a hoax. There is not a mass conspiracy behind it. People within 1-2 orders of magnitude from you will die. The most frightening thing is that the experts are unsure. Myself, I'm taking a better safe than sorry approach. I also understand not everyone has this privilege.
