The Municipal Auditorium, reportedly, still has Katrina water inside. It needs to be restored to its original purpose: Mardi Gras balls, concerts, dance reviews, graduation ceremonies, boxing.
Im with you, but the best hope the building has for being revamped is turning it into something useful like City Hall. It seems the money isn't there or the desire isn't there for that type of facility. Maybe it can turn a profit, maybe not. Just doesn't seem like dedicating funds to that project is high on the list.

Maybe it is the built by lowest bidder mentality that we used then.
Now the buildings are falling down before they are even finished.

I would think many carnival organizations would pay their way and make it profitable. JazzFest held concerts at night in there during the hockey era. Worked as an usher for one, the cold coming through the cover on the ice was miserable after three hours of standing.

Cantrell reportedly also wants to use the sale or lease of city hall and other funding mechanisms to generate about $150 million to move city hall.

Most of the stuff you mention now happens at the arena, the Ponchartrain center, the Alario Center, or the Convention Center. None of which were around in the heyday of the Auditorium in the 60s and 70s.
Don’t forget NWA wrasslin

I’m no contractor, but numbers they throw around on some of these projects seem like there is a bunch of waste.
The city is getting gouged, or the are front-loafing the corruption.
$40 million here, $150 million there. Still not enough. Seems ridiculous.

To be fair City Hall in NOLA has been a dump for longer than 25 years. I know City Hall had an annex in the old Pan American building on Canal Street. Can't imagine though why the Municipal Auditorium site is attractive or the old navy building out in Bywater.

Charity Hospital was Mitch Landrieu's idea, and not a good one. Consultants looked at the building for city hall / civil courts relocation, and structurally it has a dense forest of columns that prevents having open spaces that you would need for things like courtrooms and large meeting spaces. Plus, Charity had structural problems from jump street. The building is a dog that needs to be put down. A lot of New Orleanians have sentimental attachment to it, but that's not enough to justify salvaging a totally dilapidated, obsolete building that big with that location. It needs to be demolished.
The Municipal Auditorium, on the other hand, is a totally different story. That building is an architectural gem, but it is also totally unsuitable for City Hall, as it is an auditorium, not an office building. Just like it makes no sense to put a courthouse in a hospital. New Orleans' mayors are so dumb. Frankly, Nagin's idea of putting City Hall in the Chevron building made way more sense, functionally speaking.
Charity can't be a code compliant hospital anymore, but the Auditorium can still serve its intended purpose and should be restored and reopened, to give the citizens back one of their best buildings. It is a great place to see concerts, carnival balls, you name it (I saw Widespread play there for Jazz Fest 2001). Of course, the Meeting of the Courts angle is what makes that politically unlikely to happen, just as we are never going to see REL on his pedestal ever again. Petty, bitter politics by a bunch of sanctuary city liberals at City Hall. SMH.
Elvis and Led Zeppelin played the Auditorium. Let's restore it like private interests restored the Orpheum. Use the $41 million FEMA funds to bring it back to its former glory, and don't try to shoehorn a municipal office building into it. That is a dumb idea thought up by dumb people.

Lots of space out there, but access is a bit of a pain. Also the remediation would probably be massive.
Better to sell it as to a hotel chain if the cruise dock ever gets built.

NOLA's infrastructure issues predate Latoya. Actually it started with Mitch's dad, Picked up steam with Dutch Morial who was only interested in playing politics as the money hauled arse out. Then it was downright neglected and an afterthought (if that)during Barthelemy. Mark Morial tried to do some infrastructure after he backed his car out of his driveway and the street crumbled in front of his house. Nagin started off trying to do things but was blocked by the council on just about every move, before Katrina.

Aren't estimates more than twice that amount to restore?

You're supposed to be listing positives for why they should refurbish it.

Saw Queen there Halloween night 1978, great show and the auditorium had great acoustics.

The only thing that would shock me would be an actual boom at the Hard Rock site.

I think that plan is just about dead - to build a full service cruise terminal there. They can have 14 calls a week at Erato / Julia. I can't see us ever having close to that many calls a week.
I think under our best predictions, you would eventually have:
Carnival with 1 weekly and 1 4/5 Day
RCI with 1 weekly and 1 4/5 Day
Norweigan with 1 weekly
Disney with 1 weekly
Virgin with 1 weekly
That's only 8.
They will still keep tying up boats at Poland who are here for a day stop or an overnight when both terminals are in use.
