As an adult, we've carried on that tradition. Drink up! If you don't drink, that's fine, too, but the rest of us are going to throw down and have a real fricking party.
Amazing how uptight folks on this board are about drinking...must be a Southern thing.

With that said, every family event I have been to with her, myself and her family have drank together(except for her sister and her sister’s husband.)
This weekend is her sister’s birthday and they are celebrating at her parents house. My girlfriend told me that I am not allowed to bring alcohol because it would be disrespectful to her and her preacher husband because it’s her birthday. She said that it would be offensive to them.
Sounds a little like an experience my family had last Thanksgiving.
We’ve always had a big holiday at my mom’s place, my bothers and I smoke turkeys and hams the night before, and fry anywhere from 10-12 turkeys and have 30-40 people over.
Last year, after smoking food all night and drinking with my youngest brother, my other bro and his wife of one year walked in at noon and said that they’d appreciate it if we didn’t overtly drink as her brother was coming and had been sober for a month. He has a history of being in rehab for alcohol and drugs and shite. Of course me and other relatives were standing around with beers in hand and were like wtf?
Definitely put a damper on shite and didn’t endear the new sis-in-law to the family.

Our holidays were what they were for years and they knew what we did on that day. This guy had trashed his parents home in a rage once looking for drugs while they were out of the country, had stolen from them for years, and had blown through a quarter mill of his parents’ money to pay for rehab when he couldn’t get his shite together on his own.
frick having to change what we did so this loser could make it through the day.

I really can't blame you OP. Usually I start drinking early on holidays or when we have family events. It's the best way to deal with idiots.
