It's been a very El Nino pattern set up. A lot of warm moist air from the Pacific has been cutting across the southern half of the country. So a lot of rain and mild temps. The general set up in the Pacific and Atlantic hasn't favored blocking up the polar jet, and thus no big arctic blasts have been forced south. Couple that with the unusually warm Atlantic along the east coast, and you've got a wet warm winter for the entire eastern half of the country.

The west has gotten in on the cold though, and a bunch of snow in the Pacific coast mountains.

There is some polar vortex splitting getting ready to happen, but unsure if the US east or Siberia will get in on the cold. All depends on how the Pacific and Atlantic high pressures set up.

In short, it might get cold by the end of the month. It might get very cold some places. It might just stay warm and damp.

You're welcome for my "expert" prediction of "it'll either be hot or cold".

As a gas trader its been a real shitter for us. They did predict a colder than normal winter and have largely missed on that forecast bigly. No bueno for business.

Yeah, I remember your predictions for 5.00 natural gas. Hopefully it hasn't burned you too much.

Yeah, using the first month of winter to support any climate theory is usually a sign of an idiot.

Winter only started 2.5 weeks ago.

This Wednesday through next Tuesday is going to be pretty chilly and below average for South Louisiana with it staying in the 50s most of those days.

No joke. We had two-three days in a week about a month or so ago that were legitimately cold. That's it.

Last year it didn't just snow--it snowed TWICE.

Hope it doesn't get cold, or I'll have to buy a jacket. My wife told me my jacket looks like it's from the eighties and isn't allowed out of the house.

I think it's fly as hell.

I KNOW that I remember reading in November that the El Niño was going to cause a milder winter for the northeast and a colder (“much colder” IIRC) than average Jan-Feb for the South.
Am I misremembering?

I don't have to imagine. We have over 6 months of the year where the highs are over 90. I DO live somewhere miserable.

People love to exaggerate the heat in Louisiana. Out last day at 90° was October 2nd. We flirted with high 80's a few days here and there but October, November and December have been amazing weather-wise in Louisiana. We won't see 90° again until May. We sprinkle in some longer hot/cold streaks but for the most part you get 7 months of fantastic weather here and 5 months of sweating walking the dog at 5am. I'd much rather that than snow from October to March.

After last winter I feel we and our landscape plants are due a mild one. That shite was brutal.

Don't plant shitty palm trees around your double wide and you wouldn't have that problem.

northwest jersey had 17 inches in one snow.

It snowed here last night. First in a month.
Northern CA. 5 to 11 inches depending on elevation.
Fb full of "look at my xxxxx with snow on it."

I'm glad its not in teens or low 20s.

I do hope we get a snow game next weekend. New England hosts the chargers.

At this point last year, in Baton Rouge, it had snowed twice and there were several hard freezes.

Welcome to Trumps America.

Maybe email your congressman to stop Trump from rolling back regulations on energy if you’d like to have a winter
