So Cryptocurrency Mining is just solving pointless programming/math riddles?

For some reason I always thought there was some kind of greater good, like using masses of computing power to sequence Woolly Mammoth DNA, extend the definition of pi, or cure cancer or something.

It's not profitable for you with your GPU and Entergy supplying your home. It is profitable for professional mining farms with access to cheap electricity and massive numbers of rigs containing custom built chips that are optimized to do nothing but mine bitcoin.
