Interesting, I was a kid and walked out on the lake that year...it was freaking cold.

Adding to how the lake would freeze.. a front comes through to make it cold. It probably rained adding fresh water at the shore from the stream run off. The wind is howling out of the north for days.. pushing water out the Rigolets and making it fresher.

Will we be receiving winter precipitation here in BR good sir?
Posted on 1/17/22 at 10:47 am to The Boat
Does salinity really matter that much?
Assuming 3.50% salt, it'll freeze at like 27-28 degrees.

Canadian model shows something. NAM doesn't run out far enough yet but it's showing a central texas ice event as of now. GFS is showing a little something for north Louisiana. All around the same time frame

I'll take some snow in BR, let the kids and dog play in it but F an Ice storm

GEFS ensemble products are split 13-5 against any measurable snowfall in South Lousiana.
The mean heavily favors North Louisiana, and doesn't show anything in the SE part of the state. There is a swath North of NO and BR, though that nearly makes it to LC.
ETA: There's plenty of moisture, but the latest GFS run doesn't take temps down low enough for freezing rain to be a problem.

Which models are more reliable with winter storms?
Posted on 1/17/22 at 12:14 pm to Impotent Waffle
In the Southeast more than a day or so out? Pretty much none of them. The trend is all you can really look at. Like Duke said earlier in the thread, there's a chance for this one, though.

But the day was Christmas Day 1989
Wasn't that the year that a few days before Christmas, it snowed in NOLA?
I was a kid and it was our first day off for Christmas break. Most of the morning had very fine, very dry small snowflakes, but after lunch, the snow became larger and more wet.
My dad crashed the family car coming home from work and I think he just left it and walked home, because there were so many accidents.
