re: Smoke detector going off at 2:45 am. Why does it happen at such an hour?

Sorry, comrade. I misconstrued your comment. The amount of vitriol spread on this board is shambolic, and numerous apologies should be lobbied.

I’ve lived in a single family home for 10 years. Probably 15 times an alarm has gone off. Always between 1 and 4 am. Amazing

I understand. Knighting for the elderly is a noble cause my friend. You’re doing a great deed, older people are at such a disadvantage on the internet

Can't we just put him on an ice floe and give it a good shove?

Ok. I'm sorry Paul Allen is alive to be able to experience such an injustice and then post about it here.

It's not the home builders fault, it's yours.
Change the smoke alarm batteries every time change.

No, of course not. Then you'd never complain about it.

I will say that the batteries in smoke detectors almost invariably go bad after 1:00 a.m. in my house. I try to ignore that obnoxious beep for the first 30 minutes, then crawl my lazy arse out of bed and go get the ladder, dig through my battery pile to find a 9V battery and then I cannot go back to sleep. Happens every time on a week night, too.

Just let your Major Domo handle this and other upstairs household matters. Don't let the servants see you upset about anything.

Maybe this first cold front weakens the battery.

Ooh- I know this one. At night, the temperature typically drops a few degrees. The cooler temperature increases the resistance in the battery. In a battery which is dying, that extra resistance can be enough to cause a low battery notification in the alarm. Once the house heats up again in the daytime, the battery’s resistance drops back down and enough power is delivered to the alarm to keep it from chirping.

Here's your answer.

I've ran into this in our house. Smoke detectors lifespans are only good for so long. Even when they have new batteries and still beep, that means the detector needs replaced.
