re: Smoke detector going off at 2:45 am. Why does it happen at such an hour?

I’ve lived in a single family home for 10 years. Probably 15 times an alarm has gone off. Always between 1 and 4 am. Amazing

Ok. I'm sorry Paul Allen is alive to be able to experience such an injustice and then post about it here.

It's not the home builders fault, it's yours.
Change the smoke alarm batteries every time change.

I will say that the batteries in smoke detectors almost invariably go bad after 1:00 a.m. in my house. I try to ignore that obnoxious beep for the first 30 minutes, then crawl my lazy arse out of bed and go get the ladder, dig through my battery pile to find a 9V battery and then I cannot go back to sleep. Happens every time on a week night, too.
